Once I've done the work I'm "supposed to do" for a project, I like to make some extra creative versions as a way of looking at the project from a new angle and staying interested.
I was making a logo for an electrician recently, and I dutifully designed multiple professional-looking logo options, which he liked, but it turns out the one he loved was the "superhero" one I made just for fun to put on t-shirts for his 2 preschool-age boys.
When I need to boost creativity, I ask myself what I would make if I wasn't getting paid for the job, and the client wasn't worried about money either. Those results are usually bolder and more memorable.

Just started yesterday. Progress shot on latest 3D SketchUp model. I love it when my clients give me blueprints so that I don't have to guestimate proportions or use Match Photo.

Arne, let me know if you find a good new business model! I need one myself. Or a "real job". =)

Every second, a new 2MB .sst file is created in my Google Earth Local App folder. EVERY SECOND.  I already just deleted 30,000 files, but they're growing quickly.
Is there a way to stop or prevent this?  I just uninstalled Google Earth, yet it's still replicating.  I'll try rebooting.  Is there like a digital pesticide or something for this?  It feels like an infestation!  The files have doubled in 10 minutes, they're up to 700 .sst files, now.

Today, for the first time ever, I got hired for a SketchUp model which isn't meant to go on Google Earth!  This was particularly good timing. It all works out.

I have discovered and tried several different methods of providing Scenery.
One of them was to create a Panorama of buildings/businesses that are across the street from My Client's location. The panorama is placed so the client can see what it looks like from their Waiting Room, Office Hallway and Secretary's Desk.  It worked really well (looks very realistic).
There are different ways to create the panorama. I used photos and Street View imagery and stitched them together into a long image.
Another way is to project a panoramic image on the Inside Face of a Large Sphere OR curved cylinder in which your model is located. That way the scenery can be seen from inside and outside the model.

I have done other things but I would be helpful to know what you are working on/with and what you are trying to achieve.

I just found out that today's new update for SketchUp prohibits commercial use.  It seems I have two choice: Get SketchUp Pro ($590) and maybe incorporate blueprint-drafting into my services to offset the expense, or just shut down Stray Kat Studio.

I'm not yet sure what I'm going to do.  I've been asked to apply for a few tech/marketing positions.  I do know that I'm ready for new challenges, either way.

Here's the license agreement, for other modelers out there.  For those of you who sell models, what do you think: Will you buy Pro?
Trimble SketchUp Make License. Welcome to Trimble SketchUp Make! By downloading, installing or using Trimble software or any portion thereof ("Trimble Software") you agree to the following terms and conditions (the "Terms and Conditions"). The Trimble Software, and any portion thereof, ...

I have only used Layout a couple times. I used Layout 1 once.. didn't like it. Used LO 3 twice ..... don't know what I'm doing.
It still has lots of room for improvement but this latest version might have some things I like. But now I don't have as much use for Pro since closing my business.

I was disappointed in Google Earth before, but now I'm just irritated and baffled. I just found out that they aren't accepting user-generated models any more.
I hope that another company picks up the torch. The potential for monetization is there, as much as Second Life or Sims or any virtual-reality platform, multiplied by the money made in Google Maps marketing.
GE's decision to abandon layers and ground-level quality just baffles me.

Well, there are other options such as this: http://www.archvirtual.com/Panoptic/2013-08-19-arch-virtual-panoptic.html   But more complicated to do on a small budget.

"If you’re trying to achieve, there will be roadblocks. I’ve had them; everybody has had them. But obstacles don’t have to stop you. If you run into a wall, don’t turn around and give up. Figure out how to climb it, go through it, or work around it."

I've been asked to become a personal/project assistant by a fantastic author.  I'd like that, but I also really like information visualization, which has been a constant theme in my life- from drawing as a kid, to an obsession with graphs and maps, to previous work in graphic design, and then lately with 3D modeling.  Being a personal assistant would be satisfying to my person-helping side, but I really see my future as being in information visualization.
So... does anyone know someone who might need a personal/project assistant for information visualization development?  That would pretty much be ideal. =)

I'm ADD too!
I'm trying to transition away from my Stray Kat Studio profile account, but I haven't had that level of issues with it!  Yikes!

Oh now this is cool.  Not only can I host a webpage on Drive, but Drive will display a Google Earth iframe.  With my client's 3D models not longer visible on the new Google maps, I made this for him last night.  Some of my models didn't make the last acceptance cutoff, but it shows most of them.
It was a cool opportunity to take the code apart and put it together again.  Now I know which bits are essential and what they do!  This code is really, really stripped down.
Hey, Google Earth developers: Do you know how I can set the initial camera view so that it's looking south instead of north?

The only way (that I know off) do control the camera zoom is to program it from scratch...

But the real problem is that the plug-in is not 100% stable. Depending on browser and plugin version it may not work at all, freeze on page reload, crash but remain in memory, etc, etc.
Version 6 was more predictable than version 7...

I wish all of my marketing clients would read this book!  It reinforces the idea of not talking AT your invisible clients, but rather "getting out of the building" and meeting them!  Listening, empathizing, imagining solutions, designing, testing, tracking, iterating... and repeat.

Reading UX for Lean Startups and Loving it!  I want to recommend it to all business owners, though, not just startups.  Mostly because it's smart and useful, but also because it's so funny!

Helping businesses get found through 3D models and Internet Marketing
Introduction
My marketing approach is to be the News, not the Commercial.  The first rule for that is to show up in internet searches, the second is to be noteworthy by maintaining an online presence. I help your business get found through locality searches and 3D models on Google Maps, and then get people to talk about your business through social networking.  If you are a business looking for affordable and lasting online exposure, or just want to make it unnecessary for  customers to ever again call you and asking "Where are you located?", please contact me at straykatstudio@gmail.com for a quote.
