Between appearing on Hacker News in October and on Classic FM last week, my theory pages have been getting quite a bit of attention, which has been fun. It made me think I should go back and make all those corrections and updates I’ve been meaning to make!

So I did… I fixed a bunch of errors on a ton of the pages across the board, and I’ve added a sheet on Species Counterpoint in Three Voices. So if you haven’t done so recently, and you're into that sort of thing, feel free to download the latest version of your favorite page (or the whole collection so far).

Plus, it's made me actually post on my Google+ page, so there's that...

"Sibilant" describes the sound of "S," while "rhotic" describes the sound of "R." Are there other letter-specific adjectives? Do we need to create some?

This is a picture of Sofie's blanket lovingly wrapped around the doorknob of the kids' room.

My five-year-old, Owen, is known for his random fears. For a long time, it was the "Wiggly Man," some unknown and perhaps ever-unknowable menace who he was just sure would come in and take away all that he held dear.

But lately, it's the doorknob to his room.

"Owen, are you afraid of THIS doorknob, here in the living room?" "No." "But... why not? It's just as... round!"

As his parents struggled to make sense of the phobia today, Sofie, his almost-two-years-younger sister, simply took her blanket and wrapped it around the offending protrusion. They are both sound asleep as I type this.

Of course, I have no reason to question it. As a boy, I remember laying in my bed, which was placed such that I could see out the door and down the hallway into the extra bedroom. The extra bedroom housed — among many other things — my mom's slow-pitch softball trophies. One of the trophies was a simple engraved brass-colored disc attached to a wooden base.

It terrified me. When my parents finally realized that I was laying awake at night in abject terror, they asked me what was scaring me. When I told them, they were just as baffled as we are with Owen's doorknob issues.

"What is it about the trophy that scares you?" I remember the answer I gave, and I remember how it made perfect sense to me, right up to the point at which it escaped my lips.

"Because it looks like... a gong."

Sleep well tonight, Owen. Sofie covered the doorknob for you.
