The origins of Mexican cinema go way back to the 19th century, when people used the medium to document historical events, such as the Mexican Revolution. A bit later, between the 1930's and 1960's, Mexican cinema went through a "Golden Age", during which it dominated the Latin American film industry.

Oaxaca boasts 16 native tongues derived from five different language families, Zapotec being the most widespread. Many people living in the state begin learning Spanish only once they start attending school. Throngs who migrate to the state capital are bilingual; fluent in an indigenous language (mainly Zapoteco), less so with Spanish.
