Happy Feast of Blessed Louis and Zelie Martin!

Louis Martin and Zelie Guerin were both born into French military families and both discerned religious life before they married in July of 1858. Louis was a successful watchmaker by trade and also helped manage his wife's lace business. Within the next fifteen years, Zelie bore nine children, seven girls and two boys. Tragedy relentlessly followed their children as within three years, their two baby boys, a five year old girl, and a six-and-a-half week old infant girl all died.

Zelie was overcome by sadness. "I haven't a penny's worth of courage," she lamented. But her faith sustained her through these terrible ordeals. In a letter to her sister-in-law who had also lost an infant son, Zelie remembered: "When I closed the eyes of my dear little children and buried them, I felt sorrow through and through....People said to me, 'It would have been better never to have had them.' I couldn't stand such language. My children were not lost forever; life is short and full of miseries, and we shall find our little ones again up above."

The Martins' last child was born January 2, 1873. She was weak and frail, and doctors feared for the infant's life. The family, so conditioned to death, was preparing for yet another loss. Zelie wrote of her three month old girl: "I have no hope of saving her. The poor little thing suffers horribly....It breaks your heart to see her." But the baby girl proved to be much tougher than anyone realized. She survived the illness. A year later she was a "big baby, browned by the sun." "The baby," Zelie noted, "is full of life, giggles a lot, and is sheer joy to everyone."

The series of tragedies had intensified the love of Louis and Zelie Martin for each other. They poured out their affection on their five surviving daughters; Marie, 12, Pauline, 11, Leonie 9, Celine, 3, and their new-born. Louis and Zelie named their new-born; Marie-Francoise-Therese Martin. A century later people would know her as St. Therese, and call her the "Little Flower."

Blessed Feast of St. Veronica!

The Sixth Station: Veronica wipes the face of Jesus

We adore you, O Christ, and we praise you because by your holy cross You have redeemed the world.

Jesus, suddenly a woman comes out of the crowd. Her name is Veronica. You can see how she cares for you as she takes a cloth and begins to wipe the blood and sweat from your face. She can't do much, but she offers what little help she can.

As a child, sometimes I know someone could use a little help and understanding. They may be picked on or teased by others, or just sad or lonely. Sometimes I feel bad that others don't step in to help, but I don't help either.

As an adult, I notice the needs around me. Sometimes my own family members crave my attention, and I don't even seem to notice. Sometimes a co-worker, friend, or family member could use help or understanding, but I don't reach out to help lest I be criticized, or that they demand more of me than I'd like to give.

My tender Jesus, Who didst deign to print Thy sacred face upon the cloth with which Veronica wiped the sweat from off Thy brow, print in my soul deep, I pray Thee, the lasting memory of Thy bitter pains.

Our Father.... Hail Mary.... Glory be....

Jesus Christ Crucified, have mercy on Us. May the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, Rest in peace. Amen.

St. Veronica, pray for us!

Blessed Memorial of St. Benedict!

“Whenever you begin any good work you should first of all make a most pressing appeal to Christ our Lord to bring it to perfection.”

“Idleness is the enemy of the soul; and therefore the brethren ought to be employed in manual labor at certain times, at others, in devout reading.”

“He who labors as he prays lifts his heart to God with his hands.”

Blessed Feast of Sts. Rufina and Secunda!

Rufina and Secunda were two Christians, virgins and daughters of a Roman senator named Asterius. Both of the sisters were engaged but their fiancés renounced Christianity during persecution from Emperor Valerian. The sisters tried to flee but they were arrested, tortured and beheaded in 257. Their remains were buried on the Via Aurelia and the church of Sante Rufina e Secunda was built in their honor in Rome. Saints Rufina and Secunda are sometimes depicted as two maidens floating in the Tiber River with weights around their necks. (Source: "Butler's Lives of the Saints")

Blessed Feast of Our Lady of Peace!

Prayer to Our Lady of Peace:

O Mary, Help of Christians, in our need we turn to you with eyes of love, with empty hands and longing hearts. We look to you that we may see your Son, our Lord. We lift our hands that we may have the Bread of Life. We open wide our hearts to receive the Prince of Peace.

Mother of the Church, your sons and daughters thank you for your trusting word that echoes through the ages, rising from an empty soul made full of grace, prepared by God to welcome the Word to the world that the world itself might be reborn. In you, the reign of God has dawned, a reign of grace and peace, love and justice, born from the depths of the Word made flesh. The Church throughout the world joins you in praising him whose mercy is from age to age.

Our Lady of Peace, in whom all storms grow still, pray that the Church will not cease to show forth the glorious face of your Son, full of grace and truth, so that God will reign in the hearts of all peoples and they will find peace in the world's true Saviour. Plead for the Church that she may have strength to follow faithfully the way of Jesus Christ, to tell courageously the truth of Jesus Christ, to live joyfully the life of Jesus Christ. Amen,

Our Lady of Peace, pray for us!

Blessed Memorial of St. Augustine Zhao Rong and Companions!

Syrian missionaries brought Christianity to China in the 600s. Depending on China's relations with the outside world, Christians were sometimes allowed to practice freely and sometimes faced persecution.

120 martyrs were killed in between 1648 and 1930. Most of them (87) were born in Chinese lay people and ranging from nine years of age to 72. Of them, four were Chinese, diocesan priests. The 33 foreign-born martyrs were mostly priests or women religious, especially from the Order of Preachers, the Paris Foreign Mission Society, the Friars Minor, Jesuits, Salesians and Franciscan Missionaries of Mary.

Augustine Zhao Rong was a Chinese solider who accompanied Bishop John Gabriel Taurin Dufresse (Paris Foreign Mission Society) to his martyrdom in Beijing. Augustine was baptized and not long after was ordained as a diocesan priest. He was martyred in 1815. These martyrs were beatified in groups at various times, these 120 martyrs were canonized in Rome on October 1, 2000. (Source: "Saint of the Day: Lives, Lessons and Feast")

Happy Feast of Blessed Peter To Rot!

Blessed Peter To Rot, pronounced "toe rote," was born in 1912, on the Papua New Guinea island of New Britain. His parents, Angelo Tu Puia and Maria Ia Tumul, converted to Catholicism in 1898. Peter was the third of six children and his father sent Peter to study at a mission school at the age of seven. At 18, Peter began three years of religious study, after which he was commissioned as a catechist for his home parish in 1933. Three years later, To Rot married Paula Ia Varpit and they had three children.

The Japanese military occupied New Guinea in January 1942 and targeted missionaries. Peter was left in charge of his parish after the clergy were jailed. The following year, the Japanese restricted religious observances and soon prohibited them completely. To Rot continued religious education in secret before he was exposed by police. To Rot was sentenced to two months in prison and, shortly before his term ended, he was killed by lethal injection in July 1945. Blessed Peter was beatified in 1995 by Pope St. John Paul II. Blessed Feast of St. Maria Goretti!

Maria Teresa Goretti was born on October 16, 1890 in Corinaldo, eastern Italy. She was the third of seven children to Luigi Goretti and Assunta Carlini. The Goretti family had a farm when Maria was young but, by the time she was six, they could no longer afford it. They sold the farm, moved, and worked as servants for Giovanni Serenelli and his son Alessandro.

Maria's father, Luigi, contracted malaria and died when she was nine years old. On July 5, 1902, Alessandro approached Maria, with a knife, while she was alone. He intended to rape Maria but she refused and told Alessandro that it was a grave sin and that he would go to Hell for it. Maria said she would rather than die than sin, she screamed but was strangled and stabbed eleven times. Maria tried to flee but Alessandro stopped her and stabbed her three more times before running away.

Maria survived and was taken to a hospital. The next day, she forgave Alessandro, prayed for his conversion and died from her injuries. Alessandro was arrested and sentenced to thirty years in prison. He showed no remorse for three years until he was visited by a bishop. Alessandro soon reported dreams about Maria where she gave him lilies but they burned when he touched them.

Alessandro was eventually released from jail; he visited Maria's mother and begged forgiveness, which she granted, and the two attended Mass together the next day. Alessandro prayed for Maria's intercession everyday and became a Capuchin laybrother.

Pope Pius XII called Goretti the "Saint Agnes of the 20th century" and canonized her on June 24, 1950. Alessandro and Maria's surviving family attended the canonization; it was the first time that a mother attended her child's canonization. (Source: "Maria Goretti - Saint Under Siege")

Blessed Feast of St. Anthony Mary Zaccaria!

St. Anthony Zaccaria was born in 1502, in Cremona, northern Italy. He was baptized the same day at the cathedral, likely by his uncle, Don Tommaso Zaccaria, canon of the cathedral. Anthony was two years old when his father died but his noble family had a large inheritance. Anthony's mother made him almoner (distributor of donations) on behalf of the family. He attended the cathedral school, later studied philosophy and medicine at university. In 1524, he began three years as a practicing doctor. Zaccaria spent two years studying for the priesthood, worked in hospitals and was ordained in February of 1529. He became a confessor to a noblewoman the next year.

During the 1530s, Zaccaria established three religious orders: the Clerics Regular of St. Paul (commonly known as Barnabites) as well as Angelic Sisters of St. Paul and a lay congregation for married people, the Married of St. Paul. The lay group later became known as Laity of St. Paul and sometimes referred to as Oblates of St. Paul. Zaccaria became a leader in the early Counter-Reformation, popularized forty-hour devotions and reinstated the practice of ringing church bells at 3:00pm (the hour of Jesus' death). He practiced strict penances, which diminished his health and he contracted a fever in 1539. Zaccaria died on July 5 of that year at the age of 36. Bishop Luca di Seriate, who ordained Zaccaria, presided over his funeral. (Source: Clerics Regular of St. Paul)
