I haven't created a #green_chart for a long time, so here goes. While we are expanding Sceenius Knowledge Expeditions, we needed a way to visualize how we can grow (scale) both our processes and structures. What I came up with is this chart that depicts a green "group flow" zone, a zone of optimal performance of the team through generative processes and structures. Anything outside the zone is considered degenerative (it hinders growth, e.g. a strict policy to limit certain access). When I say "scale" here I mean more of a quality/capability dimension than a quantity/capacity dimension. The pathway is depicted in the lower left, which will cross some procedural and structural boundaries (to test the way out).

2016 was a critical year for Sceenius. We refined our collaboration platform, deepening immersion and adding a better user interface. We refactored the code base to accommodate more integration in the future. For example we just integrated the platform with Google Streetview to create "Streetwalk,” a virtual walk with a group of people, experienced in real-time presence whether the collaborators are in actual proximity or scattered across the planet. Check out the new participative trailer that pulls participants right into the story [2]. We are now transferring knowledge content of authors' books into collaborative interactive expedition experiences. We expanded our team with Flemming Funch, founder of the New Civilization Network and developer of software for facilitating self-organization of people, and Zach Schlosser, co-founder of The Numina System, writer, and meditation practitioner. Our crew is now five people strong which gives us momentum heading into 2017. As the Sceenius team grows, we are manifesting a holonic structure for our organization, beginning with three overlapping circles that represent the way we work — the Experience Space, the Production Studio and the Business Lounge [1]. Looking ahead we plan to add more immersive features to the platform (e.g. partial VR experiences) in preparation for a formal offering of ambiance-as-a-service in 2017.

How would conceive the design of a 21C organization based on the new realities of our highly dynamic, connected and participative world? Or, as +Jon Husband puts it so eloquently in his definition of "Wirearchy", how would you create “a dynamic two-way flow of power and authority, based on knowledge, trust, credibility and a focus on results, enabled by interconnected people and technology”. This is what we came up with at Sceenius (http://sceenius.com).

The first step was a conceptual capture of "spaces" that make up the "whole" of the organization (they contain everything that is part of it) - for Sceenius this was the Experience Space (where our expeditions take place), the Production Studio (where the magic is created) and the Business Lounge (where we anticipate new magic and new relationships). You can further break spaces down into subspaces and begin to approximate it with people (or roles) that will work closely within these spaces.

The next step is to create a structure around these spaces. The obvious one here is a holonic structure, although the conceptual space is more akin to overlapping Venn diagrams (which helps to see overlapping roles). But it's close enough, so that we can begin formulating what is part of the structure and what is not. We used Nestr (http://nestr.io) for this exercise and for now it provides a raw shell which we will begin to populate with people, roles and tasks over time. The structure reminded me of the Recursive Structure that I posted about in 2013 [1], maybe it will come close to it.

The bottom layer is tactical, this is where all the action takes place from inside the previously defined spaces and holonic structure. We are using Ryver (http://ryver.com) to provide us with a work chat/activity stream that maps nicely to the previous spaces and subspaces. Don't create too many channels (or forums in Ryver's tool) as this tends to fragment your activity and posts cannot be followed easily. Instead, use a single stream that is categorized into the main spaces and refined using an evolving folksonomy (using #tags ).

Sonified slides are an experiment to bring the audience "into" a presentation, rather than looking at a representation. They are created from Google Slides and an html <audio> element. With the discussion on Holacracy [1] heating up in all channels, here's a 2x2 matrix to group the different positions people and organizations are taking. This came out of a conversation in the Responsive.org community. The classic position (in the LL) is a top-down approach with a ready-made solution, Zappos being a good example here. It's "machine-based", as in O/S or an All-in-One fax-copier-printer. From here you can diverge and either go up (still top-down) and introduce Holacracy as a process-based approach (adapt and exapt all core processes yourself) or adopt parts of the Holagracy machine and adjust the dials accordingly. The most promising approach, according to our conversation, was found in the UR, which I labeled "principle-based". Here you begin with the core principles in mind (self-management, going from explicit to tacit, self-organization, holonic mapping, etc.) and figure out the rest while the people and organization grow into something new. There's also a liminal space in the center, where parts, roles and processes are still fuzzy, yet to be defined.
