Today, I walked into a crowded store to buy some holiday supplies. The checkout line was at least 15 people long. I thought to myself, "I can choose to be annoyed and tense -- or I can just chill out and go with the flow." I chose the second option. It was really that easy and it felt great! By choosing your thoughts and the way you react to your environment, you can gain a surprising amount of control over the trajectory of your life.

Take one step forward, follow it up with another step, and keep repeating that process until you achieve your most important goals and become the person you want to be. One step at a time is all it takes.

Perhaps my favorite inspirational quote of all time is "When you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change." I first heard that quote from Dr. Wayne Dyer, years ago, and I always find myself returning to and reflecting on the profound truths in that saying.

For many people, motivation is something which ebbs and flows like the ocean. Taking action or getting started on a new project or goal is easier when your motivation is cresting -- otherwise, it's like trying to lift a huge boulder. Idea to consider: If you're noticing that your motivation is mounting as the new year approaches, perhaps now would be a good time to start a new business, gain new skills, become an expert at something, advance your career, work toward a degree, reinvent yourself, find your soulmate, or pursue your dreams.

While it's important to weigh your options, map out a plan, and make informed decisions when contemplating starting your own business, it's all too easy to become afflicted by "analysis paralysis." Thinking things out before taking action makes sense, but there comes a point where you're spinning your wheels and becoming that person who's "all talk and no action." Sometimes you just have to take that first step and then follow it up with another step if you're really serious about entrepreneurship.

Motivation is a fluctuating energy, but when it's high, it can propel you forward and create momentum toward the achievement of your goals. For many entrepreneurs, the beginning of a new year (and the weeks leading up to it) can be a prime time for tapping into that positive energy.

If marketing seems too overwhelming and intimidating, then just start with the simple stuff and branch out from there. Take one step at a time and keep walking! Soon you'll reach a "tipping point" where results are almost inevitable.

If you're having difficulty saving money for the future or creating a nest egg, one solution is to start a low-cost business from home and/or be a freelance writer, graphic designer, consultant, personal trainer, academic tutor, musical instrument teacher, Uber driver, photographer, interior decorator, accountant, bookkeeper, DJ, courier, pet sitter, babysitter, property manager, or hundreds of other self-employment options.
