First in a 7-part series
A new year brings the opportunity to start on a fresh, clean page 1. If you are like me, you spent the last days of 2013 taking stock, assessing what worked and what didn’t, and researching the right tools to get a jump on a prosperous and healthy 2014!
I looked closest at the social networking I do, and what we can expect in the year ahead. Which ones are growing, which ones have seen better days, and ultimately, on which ones should I be present?
Did I want a presence that was based in 140 characters? Do I need a pin board to be my most successful me? Was documenting my every move via instant uploaded pictures the best solution?
In my search for the best information, I first saw the “Hottest Social Networking sites for 2012.” Two years old now – and what a reminder of how fast things are changing in the digital world. The listing read as follows:
1. Facebook; 2. Twitter; 3. LinkedIn; 4. Google+; 5. YouTube; 6. FourSquare; 7. tumblr; 8. reddit; 9. Pinterest; 10. StumbleUpon; 11. Get Glue; 12. Instagram; 13. Path
First thought, okay, these aren’t terrible ideas for networking. At the time, some were fledglings and others more established. Certainly all had a place in the market in 2012. Facebook was #1 with no clear second place contender. The rest of the list were probably hoping and praying that they’d still be around when next year’s Top 13 list was compiled.
The next article I read listed the Top 15 Most Popular Social Networking Sites based on traffic as of January 2014. My inner monologue jumped on this. This is new information, only days old, I must be on the right track!
1. Facebook; 2. Twitter; 3. LinkedIn; 4. Google+
Wait a minute, I’ve seen this list before! Then, I read further.
5. Pinterest; 6. tumblr; 7. Flickr; 8. VK; 9. Instagram; 10. DeviantArt; 11. MySpace
Whoa! MySpace? Really? I double-checked that I was looking at a 2014 article! Yup, MySpace comes in at #11 and …
12. CafeMom; 13. Tagged; 14. Meetup; 15. LiveJournal
I raised my cup of coffee for a long sip, for some pondering was in order. Let’s see, YouTube didn’t even appear on the social networking list (though it’s an obviously massively trafficked site). Neither did FourSquare, reddit, StumbleUpon, GetGlue, or Path.
Gee, I hope people didn’t read the list for 2012, plop down tent stakes, and put all their eggs in one of those baskets. If they did, I wondered, what were they doing now? Were they as desperate as a cat trying to cover up its droppings on a concrete sidewalk?
As for me, I realized with some relief that I do have a presence on the current top 5 at least. My account on Pinterest is dormant, but I still hear from them occasionally that someone re-pinned one of my pins. I stopped Pinterest, because as wonderful as it is, it takes too much time to maintain.
Come to think of it, it takes a massive amount of time to maintain an active, engaging presence on just those 5 networks. Which brings me to my current dilemma and the reason for this series of posts.
I need to find a more time efficient was to be actively engaged on the top 5. And that, my friends, is a topic for another post.
Now, off to do more research!
