Some of the stereotypes of Germans are bizarre (or just plain ignorant), but this is an interesting and readable look at Germany, its banks, and how their differences to America and the rest of Europe (have) affect(ed) the current situation.

Aha – so the big difference to Facebook is that you need to explicitly choose with whom you're sharing each post (circles, individual people, the public). Is that it?

Really? I can (and do) filter my Facebook posts based on groups I've set up. Google+'s permission system is more central to the experience, and all the options are in one place (e.g. letting "friends of friends" see the posts), but there doesn't strike as being THAT much more granularity.

1) this kid is AWESOME. give it a couple of years and he'll changing the world

2) the article overhyped.
His results weren't accurate because the control (a model house) had half the number of (useful) panels and because he didn't measure watt-hour output, he measured voltage only (like measuring speed to your destination without knowing the route you took).

These two links do pretty well to explain what's going on:
http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:JmlMNqVPKlsJ:uvdiv.blogspot.com/2011/08/solar-panel-trees-really-are-inferior.html+http://uvdiv.blogspot.com/2011/08/solar-panel-trees-really-are-inferior.html&cd=1&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=us&source=www.google.com

http://www.reddit.com/r/technology/comments/jnxnk/this_13yearold_figured_out_how_to_increase_the/c2dqt9u

Summary: one obscure application of solar panels would work better with a solar tree than fixed flat panels, but we already know about an even better arrangement than a tree. In this situation, a tree might well make an interesting architectural feature.

What a mortgage statement should look like.
My Mortgage statement was rubbish. So we fixed it. My mortgage statement makes no sense to me. This has been pissing me off for quite some time. Individually, this is only an issue for me. But...

A new approach to circumventing internet censorship, by hiding the proxy servers for secure tunnel connection within the ISP infrastructure.

Well, the point is that the Government can't even recognise THAT an ISP is doing it, because they can't recognise the encrypted headers to distinguish the circumventing HTTPS connections from the regular ones.
(Versus e.g. TOR, where they know something's going on, but don't know what.)

I've had my first article published (for money!) in Crikey. If you're not a subscriber, it'll be up on my blog later (and imported into Facebook notes after that).
