My review of Ken Layne's utopian novel.

- Sounds interesting. I wonder how it compares to Kim Stanley Robinson's Pacific Edge.Aug 6, 2011
- Haven't read it. Do you recommend it?Aug 6, 2011
- Definitely. It was written in the late 1980s and is the first ecotopia I know of to be set in southern California. KSR actually wrote three alternate futures for southern California. The Wild Shore is post-apocalyptic; The Gold Coast is, as I understand, an extrapolation of business as usual; and Pacific Edge is an ecotopia. These books are not as rich as Robinson's later ones, but they're definitely worth a read.
BTW, it seems to me that the quality of utopian fiction has gone up dramatically since science fiction writers got in the game.Aug 6, 2011
- Jane: your comment, especially that last paragraph, was circle-worthy. ;-)Aug 6, 2011
