A blend of Chenin, Sauvignon Blanc, Verdehlo, and Viognier... a delectable wine with a sweet love story:
"Laurens Campher was a young German soldier who started farming at Muratie Wine Estate in 1685. This blend is a labour of love, much like Laurens’ love for Ansela van de Caab. Their love was ultimately rewarding, bringing about the birth of their three children, her freedom and the development of a farm that was only officially granted to Campher in 1699 but is still going strong over three centuries later."

There are those who immerse themselves in the vines. At the simplest, they get to walk between beautiful vines and hear the crunch of the soil beneath their feet each day. When they're not in the vineyard, they're thinking about the vineyard, the grapes, the weather, and the soil. Mentally weighing up and working out how to balance hundreds of realities - natural and man made - and how they will affect each barrel of wine is a constant ticking in their minds.
It's complex. It's rewarding. And it can be devastating.
Here's to those who direct their passionate energy at the art of making wine. Here's to being #ProudlySouthAfrican. Here's to our beautiful country and all its hardworking people.

Heard of Growing Paper? It's a marvellous thing full of life. Literally. The wine bottle tag you see in the photo is laced with seeds; you plant the whole thing! Backsberg has joined forces with Growing Paper and is giving away a year's supply of their wine if you plant the neck tag and ahem tag them with your baby plant on Instagram.
Buy your bottle of Backsberg #SauvignonBlanc at Checkers on your way home and have a spot of gardening fun before dinner commences. Remember to water it! :)

When someone visits from overseas and brings a New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc... what do you do?

a) Get excited; it's something new to try! And New Zealand Sauvignon Blancs have a good name, after all.
b) Gasp in horror. How dare they bring a Sauvignon Blanc from another country into my home.
c) Rush to the wine rack to choose a South African Sauvignon Blanc to open and do a taste-comparison.
d) Something else. (Tell us what!)

Just look at them; aren’t they lovely? 😉

Our splendid judges are slaving away - last day! - sniffing and tasting and scribbling notes as they wade through this year’s entries in the 2018 #FNBTop10 competition.

Which Sauvignon Blancs will make it? We’re eager to find out. You, too? Well, hang about on to the edge of your seats for a bit longer... enjoy the anticipation!

Locals usually know best. Some more than others. Not only a maker of excellent wines, Pierre of Giant Periwinkle Wines has a few tricks up his sleeve when it comes to diving for and preparing fresh seafood and pairing it with Sauvignon Blanc along the shores of South Africa. Here is one of his splendid tricks that leaves you wondering ‘Why didn’t I think of that?’...
Pickled Alikreukel (otherwise known as Giant Periwinkles)
WINE PAIRING: GIANT PERIWINKLE’S SOUTH CAPE WHITE (SAUVIGNON BLANC/SEMILLON BLEND)
Directions:
1 Boil Alikreukel (a.k.a. Giant Periwinkles) until they are loose in their shells, approx. 15 to 20 minutes.
2 Shake them from their shells and rinse in clean water.
3 Remove and discard the intestine from the muscular “foot” of the Giant Periwinkle, and thinly slice the meat that’s left.
4 Pickle them for two days in the brine from a jar of a very famous pickled onion brand – you know which. Pierre suggests getting the strong one.
5 Enjoy with some cheddar cheese and savoury biscuits.
P.S. He shared two more recipes which we put on our blog. Link in our bio!
