About Il Giardino

A gentle stroll down a quiet cobbled lane in Ubud leads to Il Giardino, tucked into the ornamental gardens of the historic Han Snel Gallery. This evocative restaurant blends the flavors of an Italian trattoria with the magic of an enchanted Balinese Garden and the sensual artworks of the famous Dutch painter. Soft sexy jazz mingled with Italian crooners sets the mood for this alluring restaurant clustered around ponds brimming with lotus flowers, pots filled with fresh herbs and gurgling water fountains. Balmy nights are ripe for romance as a gentle breeze carries the delicate perfume of tropical flowers, while the moon light peeps through the frangipani trees and candle wax drips.

Opened in August 2011, Il Giardino is the third restaurant by Kali, Ketut and Denise, the dynamic trio behind the Three Monkeys success story. Together they combine their unique passions and skills to create some of the island’s most evocative and enjoyable dining experiences.

Step into Il Giardino’s secret garden and you will be greeted like family – the warmth and friendliness of the staff an essential part of the experience. Chef Kali Sary combines her Mediterranean heritage and a life long love affair with Italy and a unique culinary flair to create a magical effect. Her story spans generations of cooks, bringing a rich, multi-cultural tapestry woven from the music of mandolins, sweets made from hand written recipes brought from the Greek isles, fresh seafood from Grandfather’s boat, vegetables grown from seeds carried years ago from Egypt, huge family Sunday feasts, and ground breaking restaurants.

Pesto ground from basil grown in the garden, gourmet pizza baked to perfection in the wood-fired oven, pappardelle with hearty lamb ragu, slow cooked risotto, sweet cannoli learned from her grandmother, to-die-for gnocchi and so much more. At Il Giardino the tradition lives on with Kali happily hosting customers from around the globe, her talent for creating inspired and innovative food, flair for design, passion for life, and love of music infusing every aspect of the restaurant.

Not that this restaurant only open for dinner. We ordered Tenderloin, Bali pizza and pear and Gorgonzola cheese pizza. Tenderloin is definitely 5 stars, exactly medium and the sauce was very good (a little sour and the mash potatoes were well done). Bali pizza, the cheese needs to be more fragrant and probably chicken to be more salty. Otherwise, it has nice texture but lack of depth. Salad, need more balancing on the sauce instead of just Balsamic. Environment is 5 stars, nice quiet surrounding. Best in July or August, where Ubud is a little cool. Pleasant experience and highly recommended. Nice music too

A nice restaurant surronded by a little garden with pond situated away from any noise or traffic. They have their own mascots, one white and another black duck that follows each other all over. Rich menu with Italian inspired dishes. Each time I went there I ordered my insalata favorite: Carpaccio of cured salmon, wild ruccola, fried capers.

Today was my first visit to il giardino and definitely wont be my last. I love italian food and often eat it back home. Safe to say this is the best ive had in bali. I had the gnocchi it was so soft and the sauce was full of flavour. Highly recommended A+++ (also serivce was brilliant)

A hidden gem. Quiet but nice music playing. Romantic setting and lighting. As good as pizza in Napoli or pasta in Roma. Perfect in my opinion.

Wow. What a find. It is a little hard to find but well worth the effort. I have only been once but the staff are professional and obviously educated on the menu a can advise you on your selections. The food is first class in spite of being at a large disadvantage eg not fresh milk etc they pull the rabbit out of the hat every plate I was served. The ambience was amazing with really lovely world music, the lighting was a little to low for my eyes but the staff was quick with a light so not a problem. 9/10
