Totally cosmic!
The beautiful short time-lapse video below was captured in California’s Red Rock Canyon state park in mid December of 2015 by photographer Nao Tharp. Shooting alone in the desert, Tharp had his camera trained on the glittering night sky and was using time-lapse photography to capture the constellations gracefully crossing the heavens.

We all feel a little blue this time of year. In his latest column, Jon Sienkiewicz tells you how to turn the blues into art.
I get ’em. You probably get ’em too. Those feelings of photographic futility when the sky and the ground and your car and your imagination are all the same dim shade of dirty, dingy gray, and there’s really no point to stepping outside to take photographs. How do you beat the bad weather doldrums? Here are a few ideas.

Great idea!
While it may seem hard to believe at first, this adorable little book is actually a working pop-up pinhole style camera. A wonderful gift idea for photographers of all ages, the book offers a detailed explanation—and even demonstrates—exactly how a simple bit of folded paper can be used to create a beautiful photographic image.

A bright, colorful photo of the day on an otherwise dark, winter's day.
Our Shutterbug Photo of the Day by Tracee Austin features a delicate thistle in a vibrant shade of bright purple set against a soft green background. “Thistles grow wild along many trails in Texas. I was able to get up close with this one. I love the purple,” writes Austin. This image was captured with a Canon Rebel SL1 at ISO 320, 1/400 sec, f/5.6. See a larger version of the photo in the Shutterbug Photo of the Day gallery here.

Some essential (and fun) stuff for your next photo trek.

GoPro Camo Housing: This camera housing camouflages your GoPro in woodland environments. The Realtree Xtra pattern effectively blends into any forest habitat year-round. The QuickClip lets allows users to attach it to a backwards baseball cap or other 3mm to 10mm thick object. The housing is waterproof to 131-feet, it is not reflective and includes LCD concealment stickers to eliminate light reflection from the LCD window. The suggested retail pr...

More important for some photographers than Denver vs Carolina was Canon vs Nikon during the big game.
At least according to the above photograph (supplied by Canon USA, of course) and some anecdotes we heard from photographers who shot the big game, Canon’s "white" lenses appeared to still dominate the sidelines at this past Sunday’s Super Bowl. “With more than 70 percent of the photographers in the San Francisco stadium using Canon EOS DSLR cameras and EF lenses, Canon’s iconic white lenses filled the sidelines from the opening kickoff to the fi...

Good news this morning for Adobe Bridge fans.
We’ve always felt that Adobe’s Bridge image management application has been an unsung (or under-sung) application in the company’s Creative Cloud (CC) software suite. Well, this morning, Bridge took center stage as the company has finally updated the application with Adobe Bridge CC version 6.2. (The last major release of Bridge came more than two years ago.) While not exactly an overhaul of Bridge, version 6.2 offers several key upgrades includi...

Fun stuff for history buffs!
The fun, informative video below from COOPH expertly explains anything and everything you ever wanted to know about the art of photography. From its ancient beginnings with the discovery of the camera obscura technique—and its use by iconic painters Rembrandt, Vermeer and Caravaggio—to the advances of heliography and daguerreotype. These discoveries soon began to build and drive the advancement of photography forward at a much faster rate.
