The Discussion About Taking the Keys Away

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention say fatal automobile crash rates start increasing after the age of 70, and the highest rate of fatal automobile crashes is for those over 85.

There are ways to discuss the topic of taking the keys away from your older family member who has an increasing numbers of automobile accidents. Including the following in that discussion is usually appropriate.
1. their safety and others
2. maintain activities with ride share services for seniors
3. offer other means of transportation to end night driving

Sometimes your loved one refuses to give up driving their car. Under that circumstance contacting your local DMV to file an unsafe driver report will in many states require them to pass a driving test and might also require them to pass a medical evaluation.

A lot of people know when it's time to give up driving, but want to know that their way of life won't change dramatically. A little push is your responsibility to help it happen.

Common Auto Insurance Mistakes

The more the car costs, the more expensive it is to insure.

Two of the measurements used to determine an auto insurance premium is the cost to repair and loss history. A less expensive to purchase mid-size car may have a higher loss history or higher repair costs than a luxury car.

It’s OK to have only the minimum liability insurance level for your state.

What your state requires and what is necessary to meet your needs can often be very different. Be prepared to pay a lot more if you're in an accident if you chose to insure yourself only to the state minimum. To keep our customers adequately insured we always suggest coverage limits above the state minimums.

Use the Parking (Emergency) Brake Correctly

Most people don't engage their parking brake, only use it on a hill, or don't use it properly. While it's name includes emergency, it should be used every time before you turn off your engine, but don't wait until you've turned off the engine to engage it. The correct way to use the parking brake is to stop your car with the primary brakes, set the parking brake, and then place your transmission in park before turning off your engine. It's best for your transmission to not hold your car in place with the primary brake.

Therefore, when you start your engine, you press your primary brake pedal, disengage the parking (emergency) brake, and shift into drive. Don't ever drive with the parking brake engaged. That will damage your car.

If your primary brakes fail while you're driving, slowly pull up on the parking (emergency) brake handle or engage the pedal down (which ever is appropriate for your car) evenly and slowly to control your car and to come to a complete stop.

House Staging To Reduce Insurance Premium

Taking longer than expected to sell your house and you already moved out? You can't stop insuring it just because you don't live in it. One option for reducing your home insurance rates while you hold out for top price may be to hire a house staging company depending on which type of policy you insure your home with.

If available with your type of policy per the policy provisions, your insurance company could potentially not exclude vandalism, arson, or broken glass as perils if you have a resident manager living in your house as it waits to be sold. A house staging resident manager will live in your house, maintain the property, pay for utilities, and some will take care of your yard work.

This service isn't for everyone and it can be expensive, but it could potentially reduce your home insurance rates and can be beneficial for the overall appearance of your home for selling. Before moving out and considering any available options, review what options may be available with your insurance agent.

Classic Car Insurance

Since owners of classic cars drive them less and typically take the best care of them, auto insurance premium rates can be nearly 50% lower. The auto insurance policy will limit how many miles you can drive it and also may require it to be garaged when not being driven. Classic car insurance requires that the automobile is not to be used as your primary transportation.

Graduated Driver Licensing Saves Lives

Auto insurance is higher for drivers under the age of 25 because teenagers cause a disproportionate number of accidents and traffic deaths. Over 20 years ago states began restricting the hours that the first time driver is legally allowed to drive.

For example, South Carolina has the following requirements:

15 years old: eligible for a learner's permit.
15 years old and 180 days: eligible for provisional license.
16 years old: eligible for special restricted license, or unrestricted license (with conditional license).
17 years old: eligible for regular driver license (without conditional license).

Graduated Driver Licensing restrictions reduced automobile related deaths among 15-19 year old's by over 50%. A recent survey of 500 parents of teen drivers conducted by OP4G found that parents allow their new drivers to violate some important Graduated Driver Licensing restrictions. Only 41% of parents required their under-18 drivers to follow all GDL guidelines.

Hurricane Season Home Insurance Info

Does your South Carolina homeowner insurance adequately cover the increased value of your house? Below is another check list of things to do before hurricane season arrives.

1. Take inside anything that can be moved by the strong winds possible with a hurricane or tropical storm. This is protection for your house, your family, and your neighbors.

2. Secure your most important papers, files, and other personal items for the evacuation trip. Some of the documents to take out of your home include wills, insurance policies, stocks, and licenses. Keep up-to-date data files backed up elsewhere that can include some of these documents and also video of the inside of your home.

3. Turn off your electricity, gas, and water before evacuating inland.

5. Have an evacuation plan prepared for where you want to go inland. Notify family where you are going to and how to get in contact with you.

6. If you plan on going to a public shelter remember that pets are not allowed.

Has Your Homeowner Insurance Policy Adjusted For Inflation

Evaluate any changes you may have made to your home during the last year and review whether your South Carolina homeowner insurance policy covers those changes. Don't discover that you're underinsured after you need to file a claim. One external change that happens most years is inflation. A homeowner insurance policy that covers 100% of the value of your house usually includes inflation guard coverage.

However, not everyone chooses 100% coverage. Some choose a 80% coverage level for their homeowner insurance to save money. They should confirm whether inflation has left them in a further underinsured position.
