Michelle, Heidi and Christine were fortunate enough to be given an inside tour of the Cleanaway Material Recovery Facility (MRF) in Guildford today. These guys do a great job of sorting, separating and treating our recyclables items, significantly decreasing the amount of waste going into landfill.

It is the largest facility of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere. The Perth MRF can accept:

• Metal pots and pans, steel and aluminium cans - Steel tins are baled and sold to recyclers. Steel is 100 per cent recyclable. Aluminium cans are baled and sent to a processing plant, where they are heated and melted in a furnace.
• Newspaper, paper and magazines, cardboard boxes
• Glass bottles and jars
• Milk and juice cartons, plastic containers, plastic toys
• Bulk Polystyrene packaging
• Commingled C&I

It was an informative talk with some key takeaway messages for keen recyclers out there which include:

• Don’t tie your recyclables in plastic bags (unless it is a bag of bags);
• Soft drink/milk/glass bottles don’t need to be washed, simply emptied of liquid contents (anything smaller than your hand falls through the sorting lines and cannot be recycled, so squash the lid inside the bottle so they are picked up in the recycling process);
• Keep putrescible or green waste out – one stick or nappy in bundled newspaper can lead to buyers knocking back a whole shipment.

Do you get annoyed by how much packaging and labels you throw in the bin each week after shopping? You can take steps to reduce your waste by taking your own containers and bags to the shops, buy in bulk or seek out shops like this one that have everything from bulk shampoo to nuts and pasta. Take your own empty bottles, jars and reusable bags, weigh them on the way in, fill them up and weigh them on the way out when you pay. Then take your goodies home without taking unnecessary packaging and advertising with you
