As we shift into crisp, cool weather, there’s a noticeable change in energy.
In the Ayurvedic system, autumn and early winter are governed by the vata dosha, made up of of air and ether.

The vata season brings with it the qualities of constriction, dryness, mobility, lightness, and coolness. If our lifestyle is marked by too much of these qualities, there is a depletion of ojas—or the “fluid of life.”

You can experience exhaustion, anxiety, a sense of overwhelm, systemic dryness, gas, bloating, depression, dry and snapping joints, constipation, a sense of constriction and fear... and more.

But if we introduce the opposing qualities, we can strengthen ojas and guard a sense of contentedness and wellbeing.

Think nourishing, warm, grounding practices that prepare you for the depths of winter.

Here are some simple tips to support balance during vata season.

-drink ginger or fennel tea
-avoid iced or cold drinks
-minimize stimulants
-receive Ayurvedic Body therapies to nourish, calm and fortify the mind and body
-perform daily oil self-massage
-be routine about your meal times. Eat three meals a day. Make lunch your largest meal
-refrain from snacking
-lights out by 10 pm
-One to 2 slow/gentle/rejuvenative yoga classes per day
-Take Ashwaghanda daily to boost immunity, feed the nervous system and support whole body funtion - @banyanbotanicals offers quality ashwaghanda.

Know the 9 Noble Virtues of the Norse Tradition? They'll help you along your way...

1. Courage - Stand for your beliefs and live according to your code of ethics.

2. Truth - Recognize and champion the truth. Refuse to lie to yourself as well as others.

3. Honor - Our honor is our worth, it is the sacred moral compass that everyone should depend on.

4. Fidelity - Be loyal to those you are connected to.

5. Discipline - Stay on your path. Complete what you have started.

6. Hospitality - Treat people who come to visit you with the same kindness and respect as you give your own family. (Be careful, in our modern world we should not blindly open our homes to just anyone.) Although it is our duty to offer help to friends and relatives in times of need it is not our place to put up with thieves, wasters, and destructive influences on the family.

7. Self Reliance - Take responsibility for your life. Learning the skills and abilities to overcome the obstacles of life, the providing for ones self and ones family.

8. Industriousness - Work hard at whatever you do.

9. Perseverance - Keep on trying until you succeed.

This is your journey. Be curious, make experiments learn, purify and rejuvenate yourself along the way, and LOVE. It's all good.

Shirodhara is a form of Ayurveda therapy that involves gently pouring liquids over the forehead.

The name comes from the Sanskrit words shiro (head) and dhara (flow). The liquids used in shirodhara depend on what is being treated, but can include oil, milk, buttermilk, coconut water, or even plain water.

Shirodhara has been used to treat a variety of conditions including eye diseases, sinusitis, allergic rhinitis, greying of hair, neurological disorders, memory loss, insomnia, hearing impairment, tinnitus, vertigo, Ménière's disease and certain types of skin diseases like psoriasis.

It is also used non-medicinally at spas for its relaxing properties. Studies report that Ayurvedic Shirodhara is a safe option to improve sleep quality among people who have sleep problems.

Shirodhara is also effective in treating mental conditions such as anxiety, and mental stress. The calming effect produced by Shirodhara is similar to that obtained with meditation

Shirodhara involves pouring of warm herbal oils on the head. However, it may begin with a full body massage known as Abhyangam. Shirodhara also involves a head massage. Shirodhara is thought to work by relaxing the hypothalamus in the brain. It can also normalize the functions of hormones that regulate sleep and emotions.

Never tried it? Whether you're new to the therapy, or know it and love it -- now, at the onset of fall/winter, is the ideal time to receive it!

Fall and winter season is hard on the upper respiratory tract. The air is cold and dry, following the hot dry heat of summer. Add smoke and airborn toxins from wildfires, and it's obvious that a little extra care is in order.

Without maintenance, the sinuses and respiratory tract get worked over.

When the nasal membranes and sinuses are compromised, there’s a breeding ground for upper respiratory illness.

Prevention is (always) the best medicine.

Ayurveda offers simple preventative ways to keep the nasal passages moist and nourished – and the sinuses well conditioned and balanced. Read on…

So - snort some oil. I’m not kidding. This practice is Ayurvedic gold. Not only does it keep the nasal passages moist so that they can do their job of filtering particulate matter and pathogens from the air but, according to this ancient healing tradition, it also does this: treats hoarseness of voice, stiffness in the head, neck and jaw areas, reduces headaches and benefits certain eye and ear problems, relieves mental and emotional stress, anxiety, fear and negativity.

Visit your local Ayurvedic Practice or spa and schedule a NASYA treatment. This treatment clears the sinuses and reverses the deep dryness that is the root of many respiratory, central nervous system and allergic conditions by cleansing, opening and suffusing the sinus tissues with medicinal oils.
Nasya begins with a facial massage. Heat is then applied to the face and head to encourage dilation and opening of the sinuses. Medicated oil is administered into the nasal passages to cleanse and purify the sinuses. Nasya has an immediately beneficial affect on allergies, snoring, sinusitis, tinnitus, sleep apnea and headaches. It is a valuable aid for increasing mental focus.

You have the capacity to deeply know the world around you and the people in it. The senses are important - and they should inform a deeper intelligence that carries it's own understanding, born of an essential connectedness.

You will find that your life must become very simple when you have cultivated the ability to recognize.

The senses, yoked to a deeper awareness, are assaulted by anything that is not in alignment with that which is connected to deeper knowing.

Out of self-preservation, you must periodically retreat from the harshness of a world that looks but does not see. That listens but does not hear.

The infinite fullness that is the source of the power of recognition imparts a sense of completion... you know that what you seek is within. And you go there, often, to abide with the sweetness and richness found therein.

The concept of Svastha (to be established in the self) is unique to the Ayurvedic Life Science. Svastha is the state of being established in one’s Self and experiencing bliss throughout the mind, soul, and senses, while sustaining perfect equilibrium among three doshas (functional energies of vata, pitta, and kapha), the seven dhatus (bodily tissues), the pathways of elimination, and agni (the metabolic fire).

The sense of smell is the most fundamental of the five physical senses. Not only does it work in harmony with the survival instinct, but it "informs" us of much more, consciously and unconsciously. We must breathe, and this is so automatic for most of us that we do not even think about the process of inhalation and exhalation, the exchange of vital prana for depleted air, the gift of inspiration and life.

Each of the five senses is related to an element, a chakra, and an endocrine system. The sense of smell is related to the first chakra and the adrenal glands.

Studies have been done to show what stresses people the most. Much to the surprise of some who probably have not thought about this before, financial worries, ill health, divorce, and death, while stressful, do not compare to odor. Nothing wears us out faster than a smell we cannot stand.

The fact that we do not consciously interpret odors does not mean that they are not affecting us on some level. You might think of this in the same way that you think about microwaves: you do not "feel" them, but they are impacting you and causing distress whether you know it or not.

Today we're using Palo Santo @incausa from @kitkitdizzi... a gorgeous stick incense sustainably harvested, beautifully made, and wonderful to catch on the airwaves. Cleansing, grounding and enriching for us and our clients.

Palo Santo, literally meaning “holy wood” in Spanish, is a tree that is widely distributed throughout Central and South America. Palo Santo is used in South America in much the same way as White Ceremonial Sage is used in North America- to combat negative energy and to cleanse the space. Palo Santo is often used by Amazonian shamans in sacred plant spirit ceremonies; the rising smoke of the lit sticks is believed to enter the energy field of ritual participants to clear misfortune, negative thoughts and to chase away evil spirits. Its use reportedly dates back to the Inca era.

Next to the head, the foot is the most important area of the body to massage. The foot is well nourished with blood supply and capillary beds, and has a concentration of nerve endings. According to the Vagbhata (auhor of the Ayurvedic text Astanga-hridaya) there are four major nerves in the soles of the feet that are connected to the eyes. Because of the friction, excessive pressure, and heat caused by walking, these nerves become afflicted and eyesight gets distorted. Massage soothes these nerves, benefiting eyesight, among on other effects. Ayurvedic strokes on the feet also support the function of the ears and help to relieve sciatica; insomnia; fatigue; cramps; and contraction of ligaments, vessels, and muscles of the lower limps. Because of the concentration of blood vessels in the feet, foot massage affects all seven of the deep tissues and activates the major channels (strotas) beneficially. Downward flow is stimulated and re-established during foot massage creating a sense of groundedness.

Foot Reflexology, performed with a kansa wand, in addition to stimulation of marma points in the feet with index finger and thumb, is an incredibly rejuvenating and relaxing treatment to receive -- especially in Vata Season, when we tend to lose our sense of ground.

From an Ayurvedic perspective, personal balance is one of the most important contributors to balanced interpersonal relationship. The ancient maxim “Know Thyself” – inscribed into the forecourt of the ancient Greek Temple of Apollo at Delphi and into the inner sanctum of the ancient Egyptian Temple of Luxor – echoes throughout history and human evolution as excellent advice. Knowing your doshic makeup empowers you to understand yourself more intimately and to answer the call of your unique constitutional needs accurately so that you can more easily achieve well being.

When it comes to love of any kind – be it self-love, romantic, platonic, familial, maternal, paternal – the key to harmony lies in the foundation of your relationship with yourself and with nature. Integrating the principles and practices of the Science of Ayurveda tunes you to harmonize lovingly with the world around you and the people and experiences it offers up.
