There are not enough stars to rate just how great this place is. I eat there every time I come to town to visit my family and I have never been disappointed. Start with a Hinton cocktail. I stick to the vegetarian dishes, but my family loves the steak frites and the meatloaf. They make a killer truffle mac and cheese, too! They have a porch upstairs that's delightful in good weather, and they can enclose it when it gets a little cooler. They also hang local artists' work downstairs each month. Great food, great staff, great atmosphere.

So far, The Local is my favorite restaurant in Charlottesville. It has a chill, relaxing, and somewhat rustic atmosphere. The food is upscale-southern and delicious. The waitstaff are incredibly attentive and friendly. I highly recommend The Local -- try the meatloaf, so good!

Should be 4-5. I walked in on a Tuesday evening. It was busy. As someone that has worked in the industry, I know single tables can be trouble. I did not expect the eye roll from the hostess. She promptly told me, rather frankly, that I would be best suited for the bar (with look of condescension). No apology about being booked, or if you like we can best accommodate you at the bar. No just injust indignation of being a single top. If the food and the friendly bartender hadn't been so pleasant I would have given The Local only 2 stars. The portion was on the small side. I had the Duck, which was prepared very well, but for $22 I expected a little more. The beer selection is no where near their wine selection. Of course that goes with the local fare as it is wine country of Va. The bartender was good a suggesting both food and beers. The overall atmosphere was great. The biggest and most glaring detractor was the hostess. I've seen multiple reviews to this point. I wounder if the restaurant even reads reviews? Also in this day and age not being on twitter is a lost opportunity.

Relaxed vibe and great staff. Great beer selection and amazingly big wine list. "Local" ingredients work with simple but very enjoyable memu

We picked The Local on a recommendation from a friend and the restaurant receiving "Best Service" in Cville Magazine. After being seated for 15 minutes, we finally found a bus girl (easily the friendliest employee in the restaurant) to find a server for us. After 25 minutes, we finally had a server and received our drinks. When our waiter arrived, no apology was given. We ordered the pumpkin ravioli which was tasty. When the meals arrived, my girlfriend's Short Ribs were cold and my Pork chop was extremely dry while my mashed potatoes were cold. Spoke to a manager who was more interested in telling us our experience was not a representation of the restaurant than giving us an apology. Would not recommend to anyone "local" or from out of town.

Great place. Nice atmosphere. Parking is limited in the area and street parking is the only option. If you get after 7 pm it may be hard to find a parking spot. I had the meatloaf based on one of the earlier reviews and I think it was delicious. It was a business meeting but I think I will bring my family here next time.

Solid modern dining. The Local was recommended to us by a local so we figured we try it. I liked the atmosphere, simple and casual. It was a busy Saturday night but we were seated quickly. Beer selection was ok, was able to choose from a handful of local beers. The food was fantastic. Simple, tasty, and good-portioned.

The food was great, and the location and atmosphere were amazing, the hostess was terrible, she literally rolled her eyes and scoffed at a group that requested a table inside (rather than outside) and when we left she just glared at us from behind her hostess lecturn. the wait staff wasn't any better, our waitress seemed to be unable to multi-task, she would go to a table to take an order or fill the water and then head straight back to the kitchen, then out to another table for an order, and then straight back to the kitchen, passing several of her tables on the way without so much as a glance to see if you needed anything. if you like a place where the wait staff leave you alone, then this might be a place for you, it took about 15 minutes for us to order dessert, and another 10 or so minutes just to bring the check. like I said, the food was great, it's just the staff that need some better training and personalities.
