New post (Lightening up your life) has been published on Ideal Thinking

Many people get caught on the protocols of life at work, their social environment and others. Often these protocols make us be serious, straight to the point, very assertive and many other behavioural traits which are appropriate for a given place and time. The thing is that we tend to then adopt these traits in all other aspect of life, where they may be inappropriate.

Today is Friday and many of us will have an upcoming weekend of rest and recreation and others will not. Either ways, I wonder how much better we could feel if we let go all these traits, at least for the weekend, and make fun of ourselves. Sometimes, we need to remember that life may be too serious to take it seriously.

LIGHTEN UP! Have fun, make it a different kind of fun, remember the foolish and crazy things we use to do when we were a child, jump into the puddle of water and mud or whatever else. Bring out the child in you and do it for the sake of fun, of doing something different.

Have a wonderful and fantastic weekend.

New post (How Important is Personal Development?) has been published on Ideal Thinking

Yesterday, during a chat with a group of friends, there were two comments that make me take note and reflect. Both related to the fact that many people do not understand the need and the value of personal development. Even worse, it is the fact that a considerable number of people do not value themselves enough to consider personal development as an option to improve their lives.
So, why personal development? Why should I care? What will I get?
Before I go into more detail, I wonder what your opinion is on:

Personal development?
How important it is or if it’s important at all?
How much should we do?
When should we stop doing personal development?

Feel free to add more perspective on this subject. I am eager to hear what you all can come up with.
Please note: each one of us is entitle to our own opinion and as such let us respect whatever opinion other people have. Also, there is no right or wrong, it simple an opinion. We are all old enough to ignore what we don’t want and to take what we want.

New post (Professional Development vs Personal Development) has been published on Ideal Thinking

Based on my experience coaching people, I find a strong relationship between the amount of personal development and the level of achievement and success the individual has in his/her professional career.

On this regard, I invite all the take a moment and reflect on the following quotation: "If you wish to achieve worthwhile things in your personal and career life, you must become a worthwhile person in your own self-development." - Brian Tracy

New post (Five Traits of an Achiever) has been published on Ideal Thinking

Welcome uncertainty: Life is uncertain, and many people try to stop change and the unknown. We never know what is going to happen next, so rather than avoiding being uncomfortable, embrace the unknown, become comfortable with it. Uncertainty is like a mother of a 5-7-year-old child that want to cross the street alone. The mother wants to keep the child safe and go alone to protect the child. Eventually, the mother allows the child to do a small thing and as he/she proves the mother she/he can handle, the mother start letting it be. Same thing takes place with uncertainty and managing the unknown: At the beginning we do not want it, but as we start welcoming it, we gradually and over time, we become comfortable with the unknown. The outcome is that we are willing to look for new ways and other alternatives to achieve, so we become achievers.
Never stop learning and developing self (professionally and personally): We can choose to live green and growing or ripe and rotting… Green and growing is about learning new things and developing ourselves to be better, getting to know ourselves better and find out how we can improve. When we stop doing this, we become ripe…
Never compare with others: Each one of us is unique, with our unique circumstances, problems, points of views, beliefs, life experiences, etc. We life in our own shoes and no someone else’s… So why do we compare our situation with others? What we must do is compare ourselves with what we were before and see how far we have come, how much we have achieved and then choose where we want to go and what we want to do.
Always grateful: Being grateful is about appreciating what we are, what we have, what we have achieved. This appreciation will bring happiness, gratitude and a better life. Remember, no matter what, we always something to be grateful for. The more we develop this trait, the easier it becomes, the more grateful we become and happier our life will be.
Love self: We must take care of ourselves before we can effectively and sustainable can take care of others. Same thing applies to love, the more we love ourselves, the more and better we can love others. Self-Love is about taking care of self and our overall well-being (nutrition, healthy, rest, fitness, mindset, etc). The outcome is we have the energy and mindset to achieve what we set to do.

New post (Overcoming Procrastination) has been published on Ideal Thinking

We all have procrastinated at one time or another. In a very simplified way, procrastination is form we use to avoid a possible and unwanted outcome. In other words, we are avoiding some form of uncertainty because of one or more self-talk along the line: What if I fail? What if I can’t do it? What will people say? Etc…
One uncomplicated way to move forward if to be aware of what we are doing and then start changing this self-talk to something along the lines of: What if I succeed? What if rock doing it? What if people are impressed by me?
This approach may not, or it might work on day one. It will work over time. For those who like to take this even further, adopt the following theme: “Discipline, consistency and perseverance”. Every time you feel like dropping the standards, or letting it go unfinished, remember the theme and repeat it to yourself. Again, it works very quickly for some and it can take longer for others. Either way, it works!

New post (Taking Responsibility for our life…) has been published on Ideal Thinking

Many people believe that taking responsibility for our life is about having a ‘can do’ attitude, having a job, paying the bills, taking care of the family, etc. All although all of these is true, it is only part of it.

What many of us need to realise (I would even say ‘must’ realise) is that one of the most important part of our responsibility is about how we deal with all the events of our life, specially the bad ones.

Given that we are not responsible for an earthquake that destroyed our home or other events we do not have control. Then again, we are responsible for what we decide to do next, for how we decide to feel about it. Jim Rohn put it very nicely: "It is the set of the sails, not the direction of the wind that determines which way we will go."

How we decide to feel and what decide to do after an event, good or bad, is what shapes our future. So, for those of us that want to take part of our future, we must take responsibility of what we are, how we feel and what we do, regardless of what events are taking place in our life.

New post (Achieving your goals) has been published on Ideal Thinking

Many times, the challenge of achieving a goal is more about what we think, how we see ourselves or knowing what we really want, rather than the actual capability, ability or expertise on how to do it.

Contact me if you like to know more on how to overcome this type of challenge.
