As a 20 year marketer, I can't help but deconstruct how brands market their products to consumers. Increasingly my thoughts are preoccupied with how guns are marketed in the U.S. Read my latest essay here: "Shot to the Heart: the Emotional Marketing of Guns in the United States".

What Are You?
“What are you?” they demand to know Soft squishy sapling next to sturdy tree Tan against peach, one making the other “We look different,” I say “Yes,” she smiles back “Who is that?” they demand to know Born by her body, fed by her flesh, nurtured by her hea...

Dear Mr. Vernon.
We accept the fact that we had to sacrifice a whole Saturday in detention for whatever it was we did wrong. But, we think you're crazy to make us write an essay telling you who we think we are. You see us as you want to see us: in the simplest terms, in the most convenient definitions. But, what we found out is that each one of us is: a brain . . .
And an athlete . . .
And a basket case . . .
A princess . . .
And a criminal.
Does that answer your question?

Sincerely yours, The Breakfast Club.

A funny look at what happens when placeholder text does not get replaced. Also a fable, as the author closes the pice with the axiom "content-first design is where it's at." Is this a realistic assertion? or is proofreading for accuracy where it's at?

In the Name of the Child
For some of us, the experience of stranger's opinions on childrearing starts the first time a random woman approaches us and asks to touch our pregnant belly, reminiscence and nostalgia quickly giving way to volumes of unsolicited parenting advice. If you'r...

Hi everyone. Thank you for the comments and support for us all. Some of you have asked if you can share this - and some already have. Yes, please share if it will help other parents, and their kids.

I appreciate your words of encouragement for me as a mom. While the post is written from my perspective, it's about Spenser. It's about dealing with mental health in children. This is part of who she is, and as much as we all struggle with it I want her to love all of herself, even this part. Sometimes I snap at her behavior. Sometimes worse. Last night I hugged her through her bedtime tantrums. I tickled her. I kept her balled up fists from her brother's head.

Today I will battle the system that wants to limit our benefits because they don't understand my insurance. And she will cry. She won't want to go back. She'll yell and stomp and cry a mini-Nile. Luke will tell her she's bad and I'll tell him never to say that to her. Everyone will probably be late and we'll be weary by 9:00. This is way more than I meant to write. Think about the kids and send your thoughts to them. Both of them. And thanks for sharing and helping.
