Moldova has some of the richest land in Europe, yet remains the continent's poorest nation. It straddles the EU and Russian spheres, and is being both courted and threatened as it chooses its future. Its people have shown remarkable courage, but it is an open question whether its political institutions will prove equal to them. GOPAC's global alliance of legislators is proud of our members who have come together to form GOPAC Moldova, to advance the cause of democracy, integrity, and accountability. We are also grateful to UNDP Moldova for their ongoing support 🇲🇩 https://goo.gl/RqF7Hz

Sarah and I had a lovely time at Sandy Ruiter's mounted archery workshop, and we managed to avoid impaling any of the other participants. My horse Bello was surprisingly unconcerned by the styrofoam dinosaur and flying arrows, but unsurprisingly, he was far too concerned with eating grass. The event seemed to bring out Sarah's inner Wonder Woman 🏹 https://maharaj.ca/2sFR74h

I am in Montréal to work on reforms to the World Anti-Doping Agency's governance system, in the aftermath of revelations of systemic doping in Russia. The city is a rare blend of change and timelessness: in the past decades, it has seen a social revolution, while Old Montréal seems oblivious to the passage of time 🍁 https://maharaj.ca/2sK7yed

Bello and I had a marvellous time at the Ottawa Horse Day. I thank Suzie Brown, Sandy Ruiter, & Jeanette Schevers for organising the groundwork activities, and Ruth Allum for the lovely photo of Bello 🐴 https://maharaj.ca/2rBCoqx

Meeting with Wayne Easter MP, Vice Chair of the Canada-US Inter-Parliamentary Association, about engaging legislators across North America in GOPAC's efforts to strengthen the international rule of law. The attention of the global media has been transfixed on the US President, but the fate of nations is rarely decided by one person, no matter how powerful he might be 🇨🇦🇺🇸 http://parl.gc.ca/iia/us

I attended Maude Barlow's address to the Group of 78, on her efforts to establish access to clean water as a human right. It is a complex issue: I am unsure how a legal right will translate into practical access for the world's poorest people. There are water conflicts in Africa, Central Asia, the Middle East, and South America, which will only spread with climate change 🚰 https://maharaj.ca/2rbSdnJ

I am at the World Anti-Doping Agency's Foundation Board, to deliver a progress report from the Governance Working Group. Our Group is trying to strengthen the Agency's ability to confront and defeat the world's most ruthless sponsors of sport corruption. My presentation slides are at https://maharaj.ca/2rj5sDZ

Grocery stores in Ottawa now have "British" sections in their "Ethnic Foods" aisles, presumably in response to market demand. I wonder if this reflects a new self-perception amongst British-Canadians, that they are now much like any other ethnic group in Canada, with distinctive festivals and cuisine. The foods in these sections paint a curious portrait of British culture: HP Sauce; Marmite; pickled onions; tea; rice pudding; and row upon row of sweets 🇨🇦🇬🇧 https://maharaj.ca/2qYPuPg

The International Paralympic Committee (IPC) suspended Russia from the Paralympic Games, after revelations of institutionalised doping. I am part of the IPC Task Force responsible for assessing if and when Russia should be readmitted. We met with representatives of the Russian Paralympic Committee in Bonn today, and were encouraged by their progress. However, the thorniest remaining issues extend beyond sport and into the world of superpower politics 🇩🇪 https://maharaj.ca/2pnZRXV
