It is easy to recycle clichéd stories of poverty and crime in Compton, California. Because of this, Guinness' beautifully filmed vignettes about the city's urban equestrians seems more startling than gang violence. This video closes with one horseman asking the same question our peers have posed across continents and centuries: "Did I save the horse, or did the horse save me?" 🐴 https://youtu.be/9HWnO5XZf2M

If you are going to be in the Collingwood region, do drop in at the Blue Mountain Foundation for the Arts Centre to see Ann Clifford's new exhibit "Concrete, Bronze, & Stone". Ann is best known in Canada for her equestrian art, but her work spans quite a broad spectrum, and I have always been especially taken with her sculptures 🎨 http://bmfa.on.ca/

It took four years for circumstances to enable me to accept the kind invitation to visit Britain's state Mews, and the delay was certainly my loss. The Gold State Coach in my 360º photo is now rarely used, as it takes a year to prepare it for a single outing. It is so challenging to manoeuvre that a wall must be disassembled for it to leave its carriage house, and so heavy that its eight-horse team pulls it more slowly than a (human) walk. I am grateful to my hosts for their hospitality and patience: 360º photo ➡️ https://maharaj.ca/2vDgwhZ

Given my background in military riding, I rushed to squeeze in a visit to the National Army Museum cavalry exhibits. The centrepiece is the skeleton of Marengo, Napoleon’s most celebrated mount. He carried the Emperor from victory at Austerlitz to defeat at Waterloo, and is likely the steed in the iconic painting "Napoleon Crossing the Alps". By prowess, Marengo was a giant amongst war horses, but by physical stature, he was a tiny pony who would have been dwarfed by the fillies at my farm 🐴 https://maharaj.ca/2guIsxZ

I took a quick side trip to London before returning home to Ottawa. At the UK Treasury, I met with Elizabeth Truss MP, the Minister responsible for restraining public expenditures. When I was President of my university's student union, she was one of my more outspoken Executive Officers: efforts by her opponents to contain her once generated the newspaper headline "Bound, Gagged, and Trussed". At the Royal Society of Arts, I met with some of the other Fellows who helping me with my project on horse welfare, which I will launch at Yale University this autumn 🇬🇧 https://maharaj.ca/2esXX96

My International Paralympic Committee Task Force colleagues and I spent the day in Bonn, meeting with representatives of the Russian Paralympic Committee (RPC). I am encouraged by their sincere efforts to rehabilitate Russia's anti-doping system, to be readmitted to the Paralympic Games. Yet, the hard reality is that the RPC is subject to a broader national apparatus, and the critical reinstatement criteria can only be met by decision-makers at the apex of Russian society. Those individuals and institutions must step forward for the good of their athletes and the honour of their country 🇩🇪 https://maharaj.ca/2iFs2Dw

Congratulations to Oakhurst Farm on their successful long format Three Day Event. Classic Eventing — with Roads & Tracks and Steeplechase phases — is an endangered species. Oakhurst made a significant commitment to give Canadians an opportunity to experience the sport as originally envisioned: a complete test of sympathetic horsemanship. I enjoyed volunteering, and congratulate Emma Richardson, Taya Davison, and Emma Kirton on their victories in their respective divisions 🇨🇦 https://maharaj.ca/2veTQ2Q

Often, those who shout the loudest do so to mask the fact that they speak for the smallest numbers and the weakest side. They want us to feel overwhelmed by the violence of their rage and the tenacity of their fanaticism, and be cowed into fearing that those of us who would stand against them would stand alone. The truth is that we need only choose to stand together. In this photograph, thousands of people are holding a candlelight vigil in #Charlottesville, to "cleanse and wash away all the hatred that was spread across the grounds" by a few hundred white supremacists the day before 🇺🇸 https://maharaj.ca/2fSwRZc

It is easy to beguile ourselves into believing that progress is an inevitable part of the passage of time. But history is littered with nations that have regressed as well as progressed, with noble ideals that have perished as well as prevailed. The white supremacist uprisings in the United States are a stark reminder to all of us that it takes sleepless effort not only to build societies that aspire to our better angels, but also to preserve them from the worst impulses lurking within human nature 🇺🇸 https://maharaj.ca/2vv2SMn #Charlottesville
