Julia Falkenstein completed her final project in Biomaterials Science recently and wrote this about her exciting project carried out with a company investigating an interaction of human cells with an implant. Several important people from the company came to her presentation The title of my bachelor thesis was „The influence of ceramic particles on mesenchymal stroma cell educated macrophages“ During my research, I investigated the molecular and cellular mechanisms of the ti...ssue as reaction on biomaterial debris in aseptic total hip endoprosthesis loosening.
Aseptic loosening of implants is a continuing problem. Solutions to inhibit the pro-inflammatory reactions induced by particle debris are urgently needed, since efficient treatments for particle induced osteolysis are not available yet. The appropriate material for implants is the most important property to inhibit aseptic implant loosening and following revision surgeries. My thesis should elucidate if there is an effect of extracellular vesicles (EV) on macrophages by producing mesenchymal stroma cell educated macrophages in two different co-cultures (direct and indirect) and what influence ceramic particles (of an alumina matrix composite implant) have on their inflammatory response. RT @GemGransbury: My whole PhD I’ve been planning this collage of all the colourful reactions and products, and I finally did it! Colours and the electronic structure behind them is one of the reasons I love Inorganic Chemistry. And that’s just Co and Zn complexes! https://buff.ly/2OwuE5q

RT @Yascha_Mounk: Three intrepid academics just perpetrated a giant version of the Sokal Hoax, placing scores of fake papers in major academic journals. Call it Sokal Squared.

The result is hilarious and delightful. It also showcases a serious problem with big parts of academia.
