Human Rights in China has received information that long-time petitioner Ma Yalian (马亚莲), taken into custody in Beijing and brought back to Shanghai, began a hunger strike in an unofficial detention facility—a “black jail”—in a suburb of Shanghai to protest mistreatment by detention authorities.

51 weeks since human rights defender and Martin Ennals Award finalist ‪#‎CaoShunli‬ died: HRIC calls upon the authorities to immediately launch a thorough independent investigation into the circumstances around Cao's illness in detention and death, including the medical treatment afforded her, and to make public the findings. HRIC also calls upon the authorities to respond to the Open Government Information requests submitted by Cao’s supporters. ‪#‎China‬ ‪#‎HRDs‬
