Epilepsy patients with electrodes in their amygdalas are not afraid of Shaq, Mother Theresa, Brad Pitt, or the leaning tower of Pisa, but get excited about bunnies, arachnids, tigers, and raptors. More technically speaking: in the experimental population of 41 patients who were tested, neurons that have been implicated with mediating fear and in processing "rewarding or punishing" stimuli, fired "more frequently and, on average, more strongly" in response to images of animals than to images of people or buildings. This "neuronal response preference" is not shared by monkeys that have been given similar tests: their neurons respond to both the faces of people and other monkeys.
