Keratoconus is a progressive eye condition where the front shape of the eye becomes more cone-shaped. This is caused by the apical area of the cornea thinning, which results in a distortion (ectasia) of the corneal structure. The cornea gradually becomes more cone shaped, thus the name - keratoconus, which is derived from the Greek for cornea (kerato) and cone (konus). The resultant corneal distortion results in various degrees of visual impairment.

It occurs when there is either insufficient quantity or quality of tears to lubricate the eye. This lubrication provides nourishment for the eye, making tears crucial to good ocular health. If left untreated it can eventually cause visual impairment and damage to the front surface of the eye.

Contact lenses were first approved by the FDA for extended wear in 1981 and currently about 10% of contact lens fittings are for an extended wear modality. However, extended wear of lenses is potentially a concern because of the higher risk of eye infection over a daily wear modality. Researchers consider that the increased risk of infection from sleeping in lenses is due to several factors.

Keratoconus arises when the middle of the cornea thins and gradually bulges outward, forming a rounded cone shape. This abnormal curvature changes the cornea's refractive power, producing moderate to severe distortion (irregular astigmatism) and blurriness of vision.
