Bercow: Ten Years On inquiry seeks views of children and young people with speech, language and communication needs (SLCN)

Bercow: Ten Years On is a review of support for children and young people with speech, language and communication needs (SLCN) in England being conducted by I CAN, the children’s communication charity, and the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists (RCSLT).

In the UK today, over one million children and young people have some form of long-term and persistent SLCN that can affect their ability to learn, make friends and achieve their full potential.

The Bercow: Ten Years On inquiry, taking place ten years after the landmark 2008 Bercow Review led by John Bercow MP, is in response to concerns about the support for children and young people with SLCN amid major changes in the education and health system.

This phase of the review seeks to gather the views of children and young people with SLCN.

The Bercow: Ten Years On project team are inviting children and young people to contribute in the following ways:

• By completing a short online survey about the support they receive – surveys are available for those under 16 years of ago and those over
• By downloading and completing a paper version of the survey. Once completed submissions should be sent to bercow10@ican.org.uk or posted to the Bercow: Ten Years On team.
• A sorting task activity is available to download for children and young people with SLCN who don’t want or are unable to complete a survey online or on paper. This provides an important way for children and young people to express their feelings.
• By submitting a Vlog sharing thoughts on the help received for talking and understanding and what it means to have difficulties with talking and/or understanding to bercow10@ican.org.uk

Information and guidance documents are also available for children and young people with SLCN, parents and carers and for schools / settings.

The survey is open now at http://www.ican.org.uk/bercowsurvey. The closing deadline for contributions is 28th July 2017

For more information email Bercow10@ican.org.uk or sign up to the dedicated Bercow: Ten Years On newsletter at www.ican.org.uk/BercowNewsletter

I CAN and The Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists (RCSLT) want to understand how children and young people with speech, language and communication needs (SLCN) feel about the support they receive, as part of Bercow: Ten Years On review - a national review of support for children and young people with SLCN in England.
To gather views and opinions, a survey has been created. However I CAN and the RCSLT appreciate that not all children and young people are able to complete surveys online or on paper. That’s why a sorting task activity has been created, allowing them to express their feelings in a different way.
The task can be accessed at http://www.ican.org.uk/bercowsurvey and will be available until 28th July 2017 #Bercow10Years

Do you work with a child or young person who has speech, language and communication needs (SLCN)? Do you think they would want to share their thoughts on the support they receive?

If so, I CAN, the children’s communication charity, and The Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists (RCSLT) have launched a consultation as part of Bercow: Ten Years On - a national review of support for children and young people with SLCN in England.

They have created a short survey for children and young people which can either be completed online or be downloaded and emailed to the Bercow team.

The survey, together with information support on how to take part for parents / carers and schools and settings, can be accessed at http://www.ican.org.uk/bercowsurvey

The survey will remain open until 28th July 2017 #Bercow10Years
