Depression sometimes accompanies autoimmune diseases

Some people with auto¬immune diseases also suffer from depression, mood disorders and cognitive impairment. This happens when certain autoantibodies cross the blood-brain barrier, the body’s natural blocking mechanism for protecting the brain, and attach themselves to specific receptors on brain chemicals that carry information between brain cells.

In healthy people, the blood-brain barrier functions as a series of “tight junctions’’ between the cells lining the brain’s blood vessels “so there is no place for the molecules to scoot through,” says Betty Diamond, director of the Center for Autoimmune and Musculoskeletal Diseases at the Feinstein Institute for Medical Research. With autoimmune diseases, however, “inflammation and stress can loosen these junctions,” she says.

The New Focus on Children's Mental Health

Across the United States, up to one in five children suffers from a mental disorder in a given year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. This equates to more than 17 million young people who meet criteria for disorders that affect their ability to learn, behave, and express their emotions.

Giving children access to mental-health resources early in their education, however, can play a key role in mitigating negative consequences later in life, said David Anderson, the senior director of the ADHD and Behavior Disorders Center at the Child Mind Institute.

“It’s during childhood and adolescence where we have a large concentration of mental-health issues, and school is where many kids are spending a large portion of their day. That makes school the perfect place to focus mental-health resources,” Anderson said. “Waiting too long to pay attention to student mental health can easily lead to school dropouts or other problems later in life.”

Blood pressure meds could raise your depression risk

Some of the drugs most commonly used to treat people with high blood pressure could also be affecting their mood -- particularly their risk of depression -- according to a new new study.

Research published in the journal Hypertension found that people taking one of two classes of drugs, known beta blockers or calcium channel antagonists, had twice the risk of being admitted into the hospital with a mood disorder, such as severe depression. However, people taking a class of drugs known as angiotensin blockers -- ACE inhibitors -- had a lower risk of developing severe mood disorders, even compared with healthy control groups with no history of hypertension or depression.

"They are both extremely important findings," said Dr. Sandosh Padmanabhan, professor of cardiovascular genomics and therapeutics at the University of Glasgow and lead author of the study. "And they were both unexpected."

Patients taking a fourth class of drugs, known as diuretics, were found to have the same risk of developing mood disorders as people not taking any form of treatment.

5 Reasons Why Every Couple Should Try Therapy Together

If you don't believe in therapy, don't bother swiping right. I already know we won't work out, and you can keep on walking. Knowing that someone accepts therapy in a positive light is crucial to a healthy relationship and eventually a marriage.

Don't judge me because I went to couples counseling before I walked down the aisle. I think everyone should consider it, and in fact, should actually do it, married or not. If you think about it, we do so much research, planning, and strategizing before a purchase or decision, why aren't we more diligent about our relationships? You wouldn't buy a car without test-driving it first, would you? In the case of relationships, many troubled couples wait until too late in the game to seek intervention. Why do people let it go that far?

Before moving to New York (and turning 30), I thought therapy in general was for people who simply couldn't figure out their emotions on their own and needed external help. Boy, was I so wrong. Not only did I realize that I needed therapy for my own personal life, I also desperately needed couples therapy to help me sort through so much of what I realized I couldn't articulate and dig deeper into without an unbiased opinion.

The 4 Traits That Put Kids at Risk for Addiction

Drug education is the only part of the middle school curriculum I remember — perhaps because it backfired so spectacularly. Before reaching today’s legal drinking age, I was shooting cocaine and heroin.

I’ve since recovered from my addiction, and researchers now are trying to develop innovative prevention programs to help children at risk take a different road than I did.

Developing a public antidrug program that really works has not been easy. Many of us grew up with antidrug programs like D.A.R.E. or the Nancy Reagan-inspired antidrug campaign “Just Say No.” But research shows those programs and others like them that depend on education and scare tactics were largely ineffective and did little to curb drug use by children at highest risk.

But now a new antidrug program tested in Europe, Australia and Canada is showing promise. Called Preventure, the program, developed by Patricia Conrod, a professor of psychiatry at the University of Montreal, recognizes how a child’s temperament drives his or her risk for drug use — and that different traits create different pathways to addiction. Early trials show that personality testing can identify 90 percent of the highest risk children, targeting risky traits before they cause problems.

More Child Suicides Are Linked to A.D.D. Than Depression, Study Suggests

Attention deficit disorder is the most common mental health diagnosis among children under 12 who die by suicide, a new study has found.

Very few children aged 5 to 11 take their own lives, and little is known about these deaths. The new study, which included deaths in 17 states from 2003 to 2012, compared 87 children aged 5 to 11 who committed suicide with 606 adolescents aged 12 to 14 who did, to see how they differed.

The research was published on Monday in the journal Pediatrics.

About a third of the children of each group had a known mental health problem. The very young who died by suicide were most likely to have had attention deficit disorder, or A.D.D., with or without accompanying hyperactivity.

By contrast, nearly two-thirds of early adolescents who took their lives struggled with depression.

Suicide prevention has focused on identifying children struggling with depression; the new study provides an early hint that this strategy may not help the youngest suicide victims.

IMPORTANT: What Is Ransomware? 1 In 3 Small Businesses ‘Clueless’ To The Danger

A third of small to medium-sized businesses (SMBs) have no idea what ransomware is or how devastating the malware can be, highlighting a series lack of understanding which could seriously harm today’s companies.

According to new research released by antivirus firm AVG on Tuesday, too many businesses are unaware of how dangerous ransomware can be — and how easily it is to become the latest victim of the malware strain.

Ransomware is a type of malicious code that once executed on your system — usually through a malicious link or phishing email — locks your PC, encrypts either your files or hard drive, and demands a ransom payment in return for a decryption key which claims to give you your system back.

Links Between Addiction and Mental Illness: Myths vs. Facts

We've seen it before, whether on screen or in our own lives: A friend, co-worker, loved one or even an acquaintance can't grapple with day-to-day life, and reaches for something perilously strong in liquid or powder form in order to help them cope. Fade to black.

But the relationship between mental illness and addiction – often classified as a mental illness unto itself – is much more complex than the silver screen or our own caustic thinking should have us believe. According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, the two aren't mutually exclusive; illness does not always trigger drug or alcohol abuse, though there are inherent links between drug use, addiction and mental illness. In fact, multiple studies show that those with mental illness are roughly twice as likely to develop a substance abuse problem. The key in understanding the triggers – and potential treatment – is weeding the fact from the myth.
