Many people come to yoga therapy due to chronic back pain. I will ask them to walk around as they normally do (but in their bare feet.) Frequently, it quickly becomes obvious that the cause of their back pain is mechanical as they are taking impact into parts of the foot that are not primarily designed to be weight-bearing. Before painful foot problems manifest, back pain will develop as the result of improper walking patterns. Here is a classic quote from Ida Rolf, “A man’s tracks tell quite a true story. They inform quietly about ankles and knees, but they shout the news about hips and pelvis. If one foot is consistently everted (tilted onto its inner edge,) the ankle, the knee, or perhaps more likely, the entire pelvic basin is rotated.”

When the foot collapses or distorts, the strain and impact travels up into the hip joints and the back and a strong pull or torque may develop, side to side or back to front resulting in pain. We begin to balance the back and align the posture by bringing balance to the structure of the feet. The Yamuna Foot Wakers and Foot Savers offer us revolutionary tools for realigning the feet and therefore the posture. In just one session, students feel the changes and releases from the feet all the way up into the neck and often the pain is diminished or disappears.

YOGA FOR HEALTHY BONES is another 4-week mini-course that is scheduled for July 16 thru August 6, Tuesdays 5:45 to 6:45 p.m. This is a targeted approach to stimulate key areas of the body that are prone to developing osteoporosis. I'll be teaching 3 variations of each bone-building pose: one for those with osteoporosis, another for osteopenia, and the most challenging variation for prevention.

Yoga with Cats
Thank you, Studio Yoga for sharing this video. I cannot get down on the floor to practice without being joined by my tiny yogini cat, Sage. Wherever she is, she knows it's time to practice and comes running.

The origin of the word mantra, comes from the Sanskrit root "Munn", meaning "mind." The Sanskrit origin of "Tra" means to "expand" or "burst open." The use of specific mantras enables us to free the mind, releasing old patterns of thinking that prevent us from experiencing our true nature, which is beyond thought. We actually have seven minds, each manifested by a chakra, of which there are seven. Using these mantras enables us to flow through our daily activities centered, without resistance, and with increased clarity and confidence.
Out of countless mantras, we will learn the key mantras for the activities of daily life, creating an atmosphere of surrender or letting go so that we can experience the light within. Mantras create the energy that enables us to move beyond our conditioning and into contentment, peace, healing, and unconditional love. When vocalized properly, with breath awareness and pure intention, the element of "Soorya Akaasha" (space) is produced. This remarkable element carries the effect of mantra to each of the seven chakra minds causing contentment, and meditation happens naturally.

Do you find yourself rubbing your neck or shoulders while sitting at your desk or at the end of the day? There is a modern epidemic of neck and shoulder pain. Necks and shoulders are common “tension collectors” for most people. Many of us are aware of that tension that can result in pain, but don’t know how to relieve it. Often, neck and shoulder tension is related to the mental, emotional, physical wear and repetitive stress syndromes that pervade our daily lives. And when our neck and shoulders are tense, we tend to slouch, which leads to shallow breathing, and fatigue. Simple as it seems, slouching robs you of vital energy.
This workshop will help you understand how to prevent and relieve upper back, neck and shoulder pain and tension headaches and to align your posture. We will learn yoga and Yamuna Body Rolling techniques that will initiate a deep relaxation response. It will include releasing yoga stretches that you can do throughout the day at work or at home that will prevent the build-up of tension that ultimately creates pain.
