Today marks an important day in American culture and history,  It's Memorial Day or what was once called Decoration Day.. It's observance dates back to the time of the American Civil War and has become known as a day for remembering those who have died in the service of the American military regardless of branch of service.

That said, there's always deeper meaning and histories associated with most holiday's especially American holiday's which are steeped in such long lasting traditions.  The true origins of this national observance actually started on 1 May 1865 in Charleston, SC by former slaves to honour 257 dead "Union Soldiers who had been buried in a mass grave in a Confederate prison camp.

They dug up the bodies and worked for 2 weeks to give them a proper burial as gratitude for fighting for their freedom. They then held a parade of 10,000 people led by 2,800 Black children where they marched, sang and celebrated."  This information in no way takes away from the sacrifices made by all Americans in service to their country and people but it is important that we all know it's true origins.

Happy Memorial Day!!!  On this day we remember all who have given their lives in service to this nation.
