Apocalypse is the background theme in Aleppo, where helicopters drop bomb barrels that can destroy "dozens of homes with one barrel."  Death is so constant that people have become inured.  Someone dies and "you turn around and watch a soap opera."
Syrians in rebel-held areas have borne near-daily attacks, enduring President Bashar Assad's military might with a resilience bordering on stubborn fatalism.

There's barely enough money for food and certainly not enough for a prom dress.  So this teen made her own from soda can tabs -- take a look! It's fabulous.
Brie Fainblit doesn't have much money. But by collecting and crocheting with beverage can tabs, she's going to have a most unusual prom dress.

The National Zoo said Bao Bao might take weeks, even, before she was ready to venture out into the sunshine. Not!  Bao Bao took to the outdoors like a duck (or a panda) to water. Now if they'd just let her climb that tree!
Bao Bao, the National Zoo's 7-month-old panda cub, would be allowed for the first time to go outside and play, the zoo announced Monday in a news release. ; "She may decide to stay inside the panda house," the zoo warned. "It may take several weeks."

"He doesn't remember the impact of the mud. He doesn't remember the house going across the pasture.... He took six breaths and calmed himself down. He thought, and he started digging."
ARLINGTON, Wash. — First, there was a roar. Then the trees began to twist. The last thought Gary "Mac" McPherson had before blacking out was that a tornado had struck the Stillaguamish Valley.

Love this. Workers excavating in Chinatown uncover a section of the "Mother Ditch" -- a waterway more than 200 years old.  It's L.A.'s version of the Roman aqueducts.
Workers excavating the site of a $100-million Chinatown development have discovered a 100-foot section of Los Angeles' first municipal water system, an ancient maze of brick and wooden pipes and conduits that once fed the city.

Very troubling -- LA police officers were removing equipment that recorded their dealings with the public at traffic stops etc. The problem was worst in Watts, Jordan Downs and Nickerson Gardens -- places where there have been repeated claims of abuse by officers.
An inspection by LAPD investigators found about half of the estimated 80 cars in one South L.A. patrol division were missing antennas.

We don't yet know for certain what happened between a student and a Santa Monica teacher who was filmed wrestling him to the ground.  The school sided with the student immediately. Now supporters, through a Facebook page, are in support of the teacher. LA Times columnist Robin Abcarian thinks this teacher might just become a hero for fed-up educators everywhere.

They call her "Mother Mary." A convicted killer, yes, but her defense did not touch on her years as a victim of abuse. Her daughter, a teen when she was arrested and now grown with a master's degree in public policy, simply wanted to take her mother home and cook her dinner.
Mary Virginia Jones, 74, who was serving life without parole for her role in a 1981 murder, was freed from prison late Monday.
