Sure, you may already know that Massachusetts is home to multiple sports teams, snowy cities in the winter, and creamy clam chowder (or chowda, depending on who you’re talking to). But our incredible state has much more than that! We are responsible for protecting our nation during war times and even growing of one of America’s favorite Thanksgiving ingredients. So if you thought you knew all there was to know about this interesting state, think again! Here are 5 interesting facts about Massachusetts that you probably didn’t know before.

The Berkshires of Massachusetts are home to many historical sites and museums. Many of these places commemorate famous former residents of the area. One place that you should visit if you’re a fan of American history is the Susan B. Anthony Birthplace Museum in Adams, Massachusetts. The museum resides in the home that Anthony was born in and has exhibits that highlight her life’s work as well as the time period in which she was raised. If you want to enjoy the great outdoors during your time in the Berkshires, there are many places to explore. One place that is good to visit is Mount Everett State Reservation. This park is located in Mount Washington, Massachusetts. The park is just about an hour away from the Gateways Inn in Lenox, making it a great destination for a day trip away from the Inn. The Williamstown Film Festival returns to the Berkshires this fall with a fresh approach and a lineup that is so new, it’s still in the works! The 2015 event is being billed as “WFF Presents: Wind-Up Fest” and will be held Thursday, Oct. 15 through Sunday, Oct. 18. Serious movie buffs and novices alike will enjoy the 17th annual festival in Williamstown and North Adams, MA, which promises to celebrate an array of nonfiction films, as well as offer a few surprises!

Here at the Gateways Inn, we love the traditions of fall. The Berkshire Botanical Garden Harvest Festival has been a tradition in the area for generations, giving locals and visitors alike the perfect venue to come and celebrate the beautiful changing seasons in the area, as well as the bounty of the fertile land. One of the longest standing festivals of its kind in the entire country, it is also one of the most popular, likely seeing 10,000 attendees each year! This year’s celebration will be taking place October 10th and 11th at the Berkshire Botanical Gardens.

Are you looking for something new to do during your next trip to the Berkshires? Why not pay a visit to one of the area’s local breweries. The Berkshires are full of great breweries, wineries, and distilleries so it’s a great spot for people who love handcrafted beverage.
