Below is the reply I made to a reader who contacted me by email.
Nancy said that the formula never worked for her. Here is my reply:

Dear Nancy,
Thank you for contacting me. I truly appreciate your comments.

It's true that the formula doesn't work for everyone. As I stated at the beginning of the post, "precise bra size cannot be determined without a fitting." What I wrote on my blog is simply a starting point. From what I learned from my continuing professional education students, the standard procedure when buying bras is to just grab a pile of bras that look like they might fit, and then keep trying on until something more or less works. I put up the formula to help readers get closer to their best fit before going into the fitting room.

Bra measurements are based on standard sizing, as are home sewing patterns and most of ready-to-wear clothing. My guess is that you find home sewing patterns and much of the ready-to-wear clothing offered in the stores to also be a miserable fit.

The formula works for me, but I was a fit model. Standard sizing fits me almost perfectly, but very few others can walk into a store and find that to be true. However, most people get around that by looking for certain styles that flair or have other design features that eliminate or reduce the problem of fit. The formula helps when I show people how to draft to a custom fit. But not always. I had no idea how much trouble people have in finding something to buy that fits until I started teaching. It's an horrific problem for many people.

It seems that when clothing was first mass-produced it was made for men only. The industry was convinced that there would be no way to fit women. That may still be true.

You may be interested to know that In Paris NOTHING fits me. Their measurement system is very different than ours.

67: Choosing your bra size
The following information should help make determining bra size easier.  However, because bust shapes, bust positions on the body, and bra styling vary, the precise bra size cannot be determined without a fitting.  Measure your bust circumference loosely, m...

65: Scanning for fit
