I think of this every day with my son. I'm hyper conscious of what AND how I say things around him. I want to encourage as much happiness and hopefulness as I can in his life. It's really hard on days when I'm completely exhausted and feel like I can't keep up with his 3 year old energy. But it's images like this that remind me why I keep trying.
I have no idea who created this image. But good grief, it's powerful.

Born of circumstance
Tonight's Engagement shoot

I sometimes sound like a broken record.
I tell countless stories in which a picture is born because of a thousand circumstances that led up to it.

It's not about controlling every detail as much as it is fostering an environment for things to go right

- My hundreds of interactions with the clients in the hundreds of pictures leading up to then... which leads to how they felt to act by that time in the shoot.
- How much time we had and how that moved the pace along and how involved I felt to get with locations, poses and lighting setups.
- How lazy I feel... whether I would get better shots with less involved setups or more involved ones.
- among many many other reasons

"Lazy" in a way brought this picture into life.

I had two radio controlled speedlights... but only felt like using one to begin with.
It was dark so I had to light up the wall which 20 minutes earlier we had seen and discussed doing a picture there.

So the wall for me was a given... and something just said at least look at what the wall is going to look like.
And I saw it and a little light went off above my head...

Born of laze the lighting setup came to be.
Sure there was plenty I had to know to do to make this happen as it did. But at least I didn't put another light into it.

Foster the People
Then I fostered creativity and interaction and personality with this couple all night up until this point. Meaning this pose was ALL them.

Sure I had them interact in different ways for a little bit and when I saw them doing this I encouraged it a lot... and had them do it a couple of times until they got the pose the way I knew they wanted it to look... meaning without either of them falling over.

I encouraged things they were ALREADY doing and had them emphasize it even more or stop doing things that weren't best for them.

MORE
Check tomorrow when I post another 5-6 pics from tonight's shoot.
