There are many types of goldfish to choose from for the home aquarium, and some are more suitable than others. Some goldfish are well suited to the home aquarium whereas others will quickly outgrow the aquarium and need a pond to go into.

Research is key when it comes to determining the best selection for you, and there are many beautiful goldfish to choose from.

Goldfish keeping has never been easier with advances in technology and filtration methods. What used to be a hit and miss practice is now relatively easy if you follow a few basic principles. Filtration and water changes are very important for goldfish because they are very messy eaters and produce a lot of waste.

Some goldfish are better suited to the colder aquarium, and others will prefer a warmer climate.

One of the tricks a fish shop uses is they heat the water slightly for some species so that they are more active and stand out in the shop. This practice has been around for a long time, and just bear this in mind when purchasing your fish. When you get home and place them in your colder water, they may appear slightly less active.

Eels can make a fantastic addition to the home aquarium and even thrive in this environment. There are many types of eel to choose from and some are better suited to the home aquarium than others.

Some eels will grow to 20 cm and others will grow to 4 ft. Eels are predatory by nature and most types will eat smaller fish in the tank. However some types are very docile and considered reef safe.

Eels are strong for their size and can knock over live rock which can cause cave ins. Some types of eel should be homed as a single species and others will prefer another one of their own kind.

Eels are renowned to be expert escape artists and will happily find an opening in the cover of the tank and jump out, normally resulting in their death. This is the biggest cause of death in eels. So make sure your cover is secured.

Eels are a fascinating species and many are well suited to aquarium life despite popular belief.
They do differ a lot between the species with some being very easy to care for, and others needing an experienced aquarist to look after them.

The eel is very good at escaping from aquariums and this is one of their most common causes of death. An eel tank will need a cover that is secured down, and overflows will need to be protected to stop them from swimming into them.

Research a type of eel before introducing them into your tank. Some types of eel will be fine with fish, and others will eat anything that fits into its mouth. Some species will grow to 20 cm whereas others can reach 4 ft.

Feeding eels can be a challenge and many types of eel will only take live food like ghost shrimp.

A personal favorite of many fishkeeper is the Zebra Eel. This type of eel is very peaceful and is considered reef safe. It will not go after smaller fish and is very docile. Many types of eel are quite secretive and are nocturnal, but the zebra eel will happily swim around the tank when illuminated.

The zebra eel with require a tank of 125 gallons or bigger.
