13-Jan 2016Tissa, Sri Lanka - Walk Around 20160113
I must share this before it became history
My trip to Sri Lanka was in mid-January and I have already posted the safari tour in Yala National Park near the town of Tissamaharama. Below is the link if you want to have a look.https://plus.google.com/100266574813961088959/posts/Fqzh3y6UqF7
I started my journey at Colombo on 11-Jan. That was a comfortable, late afternoon flight. The next day I went to a local bus station and started to search for a direct bus to Tissamaharama, or Tissa as the locals say, but no such luck...If you are a lonely traveler like me, you would find yourself in trouble in those busy stations. My accent vs their accent made the situation worse than I thought and also those aggressive TukTuk/truck drivers tried so hard to grab my bags to their vehicles for this long ride. My tablet was running out of battery... hell...I didn't hesitate for too long and then hopped onto a bus to Galle and headed south. My crazy full-day Sri-Lankan local bus tour began:
9:30am Colombo to Galle (4 hours). Had a brief visit to Galle Fort. The people at that station were helpful but they told me there is no direct bus to Tissa.
2:00pm Galle to Matara (2 hours). Met some tourists there and asked for advices. Total Coca-cola consumed: over 1.5L
2:45pm Matara to Tissamaharama (4.5 hours)
I ended up standing in the middle of Tissa town in the evening with no hotel booking and a hungry stomach growling. A kind Tuk Tuk driver picked me up and drove me to a villa hotel about 2km away around 8:30pm. My sole purpose in Tissa was for the Yala safari and I asked him and the owner at front desk about tickets. They immediately helped me to book a private jeep and guide(who is an older cousin of the driver!) for the next day at 5:30am!
After that safari tour, I slept for about 2 hours and skipped lunch. Then started my walk around near the town and Tissa Lake. What a wonderful afternoon there... (To be continued.)
