The #GalaxyNote9’s Connected S Pen
The new Galaxy Note9’s S Pen has raised the bar with an array of convenient additions, including Bluetooth Low-Energy (BLE) connectivity, Samsung DeX compatibility, and integration with several fan-favorite Note features. Together, these enhancements make it much it easier to get the most out of everything you do.
Even Better with Bluetooth Low-Energy (BLE)
With BLE connectivity, managing your device with the S Pen is taken to another level. The S Pen’s connectivity allows it to serve as an intuitive remote control for your Galaxy Note9 that lets you easily manage key functions, including the device’s camera, from within 10 meters of the device. This means that when taking a selfie or a fun photo with friends, after launching the camera, rather than reaching for the shutter button, you can instantly snap your pic with a click of the S Pen’s button. A double-click will switch from the front to the rear camera, and vice versa.
Other apps that support the use of the S Pen as a remote control include the Gallery app and various presentation and media-player apps^. A simple click or double-click will allow you to play/pause a song, skip to the next track or video, or view the next/previous image in an album. You can even utilize the S Pen as a convenient clicker for presenting with the Galaxy Note9 and Samsung DeX. And with its open SDK (software development kit), developers will be able to integrate the S Pen’s intuitive controls into a wide range of apps.
The S Pen also allows you to easily launch a favorite app or feature with a long press, regardless of the currently opened app. You can also customize clicks in the S Pen’s settings^^.
BLE technology enables the device to pair with the Galaxy Note9 as soon as it’s removed, and maintain a stable connection even when Bluetooth is turned off. Meanwhile, the S Pen’s Super Capacitor takes just 40 seconds to reach full charge, and offers 30 minutes of power—or up to 200 clicks.
Made for Multitaskers
Note users are true multitaskers, and with Samsung DeX support on the Galaxy Note9’s S Pen, users have more ways to get down to work. Samsung DeX has been enhanced for the Galaxy Note9 with highly portable HDMI adapters, which users can easily plug in to a display when on the go without the need for a separate device. In addition, there’s also the dual screen support that allows you to work simultaneously on the smartphone’s display and on a connected monitor.
Connecting the Galaxy Note9 to a monitor will also allow you to utilize the device as a touch keyboard, a touch pad, or a surface for writing or drawing with the S Pen. The S Pen’s pressure-sensitive tip delivers a realistic and efficient writing experience when working on Samsung DeX.
More Ways to Make Your Mark
The Galaxy Note9 expands Live Message’s expressive capabilities by integrating support for Samsung’s ever-emotive, user-resembling AR Emoji stickers. The S Pen adds new layers of fun to sharing AR Emoji stickers by allowing you to customize them with personalized messages, drawings and more effects.
Screen off memo has also been made more dynamic, as the color of the pen’s markings now matches the color of the S Pen itself — either yellow (for the Ocean Blue Galaxy Note9), light grey (for the Midnight Black model), lavender purple or metallic copper.
A Refined Design
The Galaxy Note9’s S Pen is comfortable in the hand, measuring 106 millimeters in length and weighing in at 3.1 grams. Its 0.7-millimeter tip and 4,096 levels of pressure sensitivity provide impeccable precision, adding comfort and accuracy to note taking and drawing.
Like the Galaxy Note9 itself, the S Pen is IP68 water and dust resistant^^^. So wherever your day takes you, and no matter conditions, you can rest assured that it’ll be ready to work.
^Compatible apps include Camera, Gallery, Voice Recorder, Samsung Music, Samsung Video, Microsoft PowerPoint, Hancom SHOW, B162, Snow, YouTube, Snapchat and almost all music apps. Additional apps available after launch.
^^App compatibility may vary.
^^^Water resistance rating is based on test conditions of submersion in up to 1.5 meters of fresh water for up to 30 minutes.

Experience More with #GalaxyS9’s Intuitive UX
Designed to seamlessly translate every touch, tap and swipe on the phone into meaningful actions, Galaxy S9 and S9+ are packed with features alongside an intuitive UX, helping you experience, discover and do more.
Home Screen, now in Landscape Mode
Most multimedia is best experienced in landscape mode. With the entire screen, the experience becomes more immersive. But switching from a video stream to other tasks can be cumbersome with the home screen usually fixed in portrait – until now. The Galaxy S9’s home screen can rotate to landscape automatically, so you don’t have to physically change the phone’s position between multimedia content and other tasks.
Dedicated Fingerprint for double the security
While it’s important to lock away our highly personal information securely, efficient authentication is equally crucial. Galaxy S9 strike the perfect balance between security and usability with Dedicated Fingerprint. You can register two fingerprints to unlock the phone. Your normal fingerprint takes you to the home screen, while your dedicated fingerprint lets you access the Secure Folder directly from the lock screen.
Customizable Lock Screen and Always On Display
The lock screen is the part of the smartphone we interact with the most. We see it when we wake up and check it throughout the day. Galaxy S9’s lock screen features give you the best platform to tell your own story every day.
The video wallpaper function lets you customize the lock screen to play inspiring images all day long. You can even set your favorite Super Slow-mo videos into lock screen wallpapers. Notification bars on the lock screen can be made transparent, so you can see the things that matter to you. Tapping the clock on the lock screen will tell you the seconds, minutes and hours.
You can also pin one of 20 pre-loaded animated GIFs on your Always on Display, so you can be greeted with something that makes you smile whenever you check your phone.
Find apps easily with Apps Edge
Nothing is more frustrating than trying to find an app quickly, only to forget which folder it’s in. The Edge function solves this by letting you store your favorite apps and contacts on the side of the Super AMOLED screen. Simply drag and drop icons from Apps Edge to a designated box for a quick pop-up view. The Edge function also lets you quickly reply to messages in a pop-up window.
You can now switch between Apps Edge, People Edge and Smart Select with a simple swipe. People Edge allows you to call or message your frequent contacts easily, while Smart Select lets you capture an area of your screen as an image or animation.
App Pair for easy access
We’ve all switched back and forth between different documents and apps while writing an email on the go – and the time spent doing this feels like an eternity. With App Pair on Galaxy S9 however, one touch can launch two apps simultaneously in Multi-Window mode. Place the App Pair icon on the home screen for even easier access all the time.

#GalaxyS9’s Audio Designers on the Shift to Stereo Sound
As more people enjoy music and video on their smartphones, mobile multimedia is becoming even more important. Samsung reimagined the Galaxy S9’s speakers with renowned audio specialists for a premium stereo sound.
The flagship phone’s designers gave us a closer look at how the speakers of the Galaxy S9 and S9+ were optimized for multimedia content.
More Speakers, More Sound
Dongsoo Kim from the Global Product Planning Group explained why the team brought the stereo speaker experience to the Galaxy S9: “As more and more people access content through their smartphones, greater emphasis was placed on the screen and creating bigger, higher-quality displays to view content with. Since display technology has already reached this point, we set out to design a high-performing speaker to equal the screen.”
The first step was to have two speakers instead of one – one at the bottom and one at the top of the phone, creating a more immersive experience.
“The key was to develop speakers and amplifiers that serve the dual purpose of making phone calls and consuming media,” said Jaehyun Kim of the Audio Group. “We poured our efforts into enhancing the quality of the sound and creating greater volume.”
The speaker holes were redesigned to be larger for higher quality audio, and the device volume was increased to be 1.4 times (3-4 dB) louder than the Galaxy S8.
Over 80 Designs Tested
There are strict procedures at Samsung to ensure product reliability, and multiple stages of testing in designing the Galaxy S9 speakers.
For greater sound accuracy and precision, the audio designers worked on enhancing dynamic range – the ratio of the quietest to the loudest sounds – and frequency range, which controls pitch.
“Our primary focus was to develop a speaker that is both high performing and stable,” Seongkwan Yang, also from the Audio Group, explained. “We carefully examined the quality of the components, testing more than 80 versions of the diaphragm before we were finally satisfied that we had a speaker that functioned seamlessly at both high and low pitches.”
Partnering with Audio Experts
To create a high-quality sound experience, Samsung joined forces with two global experts in audio technology: premium Harman’s brand AKG, and Dolby. It took half a year to fine-tune the speakers to achieve AKG’s standard of high-fidelity sound quality and precision at any volume.
“Users with a good ear for sound can immediately appreciate the difference. Samsung’s long dedication in search of enhanced audio, coupled with Harman’s expertise, resulted in the speakers satisfying both sound quality and volume,” commented Jaehyun Kim.
The Galaxy S9 also integrates Dolby Atmos® technology, making you feel like you’re inside the action with moving audio – whether over built-in speakers or through regular stereo headphones. Enhanced sound quality and consistent playback volume is also evident across non Dolby Atmos® enabled content.
Making the Most of an Optimized Audio Experience
Jaehyun Kim recommended classical music for a fuller understanding of the difference stereo speakers make: “You can distinguish the individual sounds and characteristics of each instrument. It’s an amazing feeling to hear the audio how it was originally intended, picking out every interaction between soft and loud.”
“Head to the sounds and vibration settings on your phone,” advised Dongsoo Kim. “Take a look at sound quality and effects under the advanced features and turn on Dolby Atmos to enable immersive audio. Users can also enhance their headphone audio experience by turning on the UHQ upscaler and the Adapt Sound feature, taking their listening to a new level.”
The team is already considering its next steps. Dongsoo Kim elaborated: “Our aim will be to create a mobile multimedia experience that is just like holding a cinema in your own hands.”

Meet the Team Behind the #GalaxyS9’s Super Fast Camera
The Galaxy S9’s Super Slow-mo and low-light camera features are possible thanks to a camera sensor that’s four times faster than conventional technologies. Meet members of Samsung Electronics’ Mobile Communications Business team, who were behind the development of the camera: Dongsoo Kim and Sungwook Choi of the Camera Development team, and Youngmin Nam and Junmo Kim of the Product Planning team.
A Three-layer Stacked Image Sensor
“We achieved a readout speed that is four times faster than conventional cameras thanks to a three-layer stacked image sensor that includes the CMOS image sensor itself, a fast readout circuit, and a dedicated dynamic random-access (DRAM) memory chip, which previously was not added to image sensors,” explained Dongsoo Kim. “Integrating DRAM allowed us to overcome obstacles like speed limits between the sensor and application processor (AP) in a high-speed camera with 960fps features.”
An enhanced camera sensor delivers useful benefits. The improved image sensor on the Galaxy S9 supports the Super Slow-mo feature in bright environments, and also decreases noise in dark environments. “The Galaxy S9 reduces noise by 30 percent under low light, compared to the previous model. Low noise, coupled with the Dual Aperture lens, which automatically adjusts to lighting conditions just as the human eye would, completes the superb low-light capabilities of the Galaxy S9’s camera,” said Sungwook Choi.
Getting it Right through Comprehensive Testing
While the Super Slow-mo prototype was already available, the developers continued to work on enhancements while subjecting it to rigorous tests to prepare for commercialization. In the beginning, the function was only available through computers. So the team carted their laptops around amusement parks to test the function’s Motion Detection feature.
“We also shot for two hours in the middle of a mountain range, on a freezing night, to complete the low-light camera function,” recalled Sungwook Choi.
Enabling Users to Get the Most Out of their Smartphone Camera
With smartphones so intrinsic to people’s everyday lives, developing technologies that enable users to get the most of their camera was key. “The Galaxy S9’s camera focuses on ease of use of the Super Slow-mo function, from simple video generation to seamless sharing; a final GIF file typically ranges from three to 15 MBs, which is approximately six seconds in length and optimized for users to share.
In the case of AR Emoji, My Emoji stickers can be shared via various messenger platforms. We’ve also enhanced the front camera, improving user experience and adding fun features on top of advanced image quality. An example of this is the Selfie Focus function on the front camera, which recognizes faces from scenery based on deep learning features to provide an ideal selfie, and enables a background-blurring effect,” explained Youngmin Nam.
The future of smartphone camera development is headed in the right direction. “We will continue to strive for perfect, professional-quality images. The ultimate goal is to develop a camera that always produces the best pictures for all users without tinkering with settings, allowing them to take photos and videos that satisfy their needs,” said Junmo Kim.

DisplayMate: #GalaxyNote9’s Display Performance Raises the Bar ‘Significantly Higher’
DisplayMate Technologies, the world’s leading evaluator of video screens, has given the new Samsung Galaxy Note9’s Infinity Display its highest ever A+ grade.
The Note9’s 6.4-inch, 3K (2960×1440) Quad HD+ Super AMOLED display matched or set records for a number of important measurements, including screen reflectance, absolute color accuracy, peak brightness, native color gamut, contrast ratio and screen resolution.
Among the results, the smartphone’s enhanced High Brightness Mode set a new record for this brightness measurement that was 27 percent brighter than last year’s Galaxy Note8, and a contrast rating for high ambient light that was 32 percent higher as well.
Each of the Galaxy Note9’s screen modes demonstrated record-setting absolute color accuracy, which is measured in units of Just Noticeable Color Differences, or JNCD. According to DisplayMate, the record-setting rating makes the Galaxy Note9’s Infinity Display “the most color accurate display we have ever measured,” and “visually indistinguishable from perfect.”
DisplayMate’s evaluation also included a measurement of the display’s average power consumption when portraying a wide range of content. The Galaxy Note9 consumed just 1.10 watts of power, which makes it 8 percent more power efficient than the Galaxy Note8.
The Galaxy Note9 will officially launch on August 24.

Bringing #GalaxyS9’s Stereo Speakers to Life
Most people don’t associate smartphone speakers with a high-quality audio experience. But the arrival of Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9+’s stereo speakers has changed things.
Tuned by audio experts at AKG, you’ll discover hidden sounds in your favorite songs on the Galaxy S9. Combined with Dolby Atmos surround sound, watching movies on your device will be more immersive than ever before.
Here’s how our team of experts at Samsung managed to build such quality audio capabilities into such a small smartphone.
01. The Problem
Most smartphones only have one speaker at the bottom, meaning sound waves would travel in only one direction, thus restricting the overall listening experience. And since smartphones speakers tend to be small, this limits their ability to fully produce bass sounds.
02. The Goal
That’s why we set out to develop a smartphone with multiple dynamic speakers. We believed that having the sound come from different ends of the phone, and emanating in various directions, could make watching films on the phone as immersive as going to the cinema.
03. The Idea
To turn the Galaxy S9’s sound into a three-dimensional experience, we wanted to place another speaker at the top of the phone, enabling the device to play sound in stereo. This meant rearranging the internal components such as the front camera and iris scanner, to make room for the new speaker. The speaker also had to be slim enough for Samsung’s Infinity Display, while still being powerful.
04. The Solution
Engineers from different departments worked together to rearrange the components, and also increased the size of the existing speaker by 1.5 times. We also spent a year modifying the kinetic structure of the speaker to make sure there was enough room. Due to the Galaxy S9 and S9+’s shape, the speakers were slightly different in size, so both had to be tuned to balance the output levels. And finally, we reduced interference from other components that also use magnets, to avoid static or noise in the speaker.
05. The Result
With these changes in the Galaxy S9 sound system, we were able to deliver sound that is 1.4 times (3-4dB) louder than that of the Galaxy S8. We also partnered with Dolby Atmos to incorporate Virtual Surround Sound Effect, maximizing the stereo speakers’ capability. Instead of mixing by channels, Dolby Atmos places sounds within a 3D audio environment, giving the impression that sounds are coming from everywhere. Audio experts at AKG also fine-tuned the speakers, expanding bass range while preventing distortion at high volumes. Together, these innovations allow the Galaxy S9 to deliver a unique audio experience.

Capture the Mood: Designing the Sounds of the #GalaxyS9
Our smartphones are reflections of our personalities as we show off individual quirks through their covers, themes and ringtones. The recent release of the Galaxy S9 brought a fresh sound to people’s ears with original ringtones and notification sounds to suit their changing moods.
Original Sounds of the Galaxy S9
From the short, simple tones of notifications and alerts to the lengthier compositions of ringtones, a whole range of notes, tones and melodies form a unified smartphone sound experience. These were composed in harmony with the overall design of the device and its UX, leading to a cohesive experience.
In addition to a new arrangement of “Over the Horizon”, the Samsung Galaxy brand sound, 10 new ringtones and 10 fresh notification sounds were added to the Galaxy S9. The audio UX team also reimagined legacy sounds.
Working in Harmony
To create the new ringtones and notification sounds, Samsung reached out to Suran, a K-pop artist and singer-songwriter known for her unique melodies and artistic worldview.
Inspired by the product’s design and images, she commented that she “wanted [her] sounds to be full of detail and imagination.” She also added: “I was attracted to the challenge of creating a totally new sound while also conveying a short yet precise message.”
Finishing Touches
Together the audio UX designers and Suran focused on composing even more mellow, minimalistic sounds that were easy on the ears, with dulcet tones designed to make the user feel relaxed. Sampling Suran’s voice on a couple of the ringtones added an original dimension to the new set of sounds.
After being created, they were mixed to produce a richer tone when played through the Galaxy S9’s stereo speakers. During this optimization phase, every instrument used for editing was tested several times.
In a single day, we might receive several phone calls and hear numerous notifications on our smartphones. The sounds of the Galaxy S9 can be tailored to our moods, so that Galaxy S9 users can feel free to express a range of emotions.

Bringing Super Slow-mo to Life with the #GalaxyS9
Our best moments happen in an instant. Whether it’s an incredible feat of athleticism, a tender moment with friends and family, or a hilarious split-second with an energetic puppy, life often moves too fast to capture. Samsung is helping extend these precious moments with the Galaxy S9 and S9+’s new Super Slow-mo feature, which gives those perfect but fleeting moments staying power.
With Super Slow-mo, Samsung aimed to show new perspectives on the moments you might typically miss, capturing mind-blowing detail at lightning-fast shutter speeds of 960fps. With endless customization including background music and GIF loop, reverse, and swing, sharing your memories with friends and family is more fun than ever before.
But building these features required some incredible feats of engineering. Let our product creators tell you how we created this next-level magic.
01. The Problem
Unlike older charge-coupled device (CCD) image sensors, modern complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS) sensors – like those in our latest phones – expose the image sequentially, leading to distortion. Even though we were able to improve autofocus and make brighter lenses, we wanted to push the boundaries of our camera sensors to deliver a truly unique user experience.
02. The Goal
When we started designing the Galaxy S9 and S9+ camera, our ultimate goal was to create a CMOS sensor that would be fast enough to reduce the distortion problems, counter camera shake, and give users the power to explore completely new features.
03. The Idea
What if we could give our users the ability to slow down time? That was the seed that started the design of the Galaxy S9 and S9+ camera. If we could make a fast enough sensor, we’d be able to record footage at incredibly fast frame rates that could be slowed down to let users capture incredible action or extend a funny moment.
04. The Solution
The most difficult part of increasing the frame rate was the sensor technology. The image sensor needed to be four times faster than previous models, and the circuits and pixel technology had to be better. To handle the high frame rates, more bandwidth was also needed for the speed of both the image sensor outputs and the video processing of the Application Processor. Our answer to that problem was a three-layer stack image sensor that includes the CMOS image sensor itself, a fast readout circuit, and a dedicated DRAM memory chip – the secret sauce for making buttery-smooth, Super Slow-mo videos and incredible low light performance.
05. The Result
The Galaxy S9 and S9+’s camera is truly like no other. Able to record at 960fps, it’s 32x slower than normal video. When using Super Slow-mo, the camera captures 0.2 seconds of action and stretches it out to approximately 6 seconds to produce a final GIF file that typically ranges from 3-15MBs. The standout feature is that the sensor automatically detects movement and captures it as it’s happening, so there is no need to worry about manual settings. Users can select either a Single-take with one Super Slow-mo capture or do a Multi-take with up to 20 Super Slow-mo segments.
