For people who need help with combatting drug abuse, SANCA national community developer and trainer Clara Monnakgotla suggests the following. Seek help through rehabilitation, counselling, and therapeutic and medical intervention. Be motivated to change and stop abusing drugs. Take responsibility in the recovery process. Involve family members as a support system.

“I’ve seen a lot of people come in, and I’ve seen a lot of people that it’s helped,” Wrzesinski said. “With the nature of the disease, it’s a never-ending battle. Whatever it is in the brain that the drug triggers, you no longer have control of what you’re doing. You stop using when you pass out or have no money left.”

…we know one of the primary gateways to heroin addiction is via prescription drug abuse. That's why I'm sponsoring legislation to close the pharmacy shopping loophole, by requiring pharmacies to report their distribution of commonly abused prescription drugs within 24 hours, rather than the current 7 days. This will help pharmacists, public health officials and law enforcement to stop this dangerous practice before it becomes deadly.

Benson, 31, is a recovering heroin addict, completely drug and medication free for two years, after a history of abuse and over-medication extending to her early teens. “I was using heroin for four years, although my addictive behavior stems back to high school,” Benson said. “Anything from cocaine, to psychedelics, to prescription drugs in the earlier years.”

"Now that these drugs have become more accessible, (young people are) using them," said Joseph Eisele, clinical director with InnerBalance Health Center, an area drug and alcohol treatment facility. "We're seeing a shift from alcohol addiction to a lot of opiate addiction. It's become more socialized and more popular."

Monroe County has a serious poverty problem for women who head households with children. Women in recovery, especially with a criminal record, are generally in that high-risk group. Many cannot get jobs because of their addiction and arrest record.

"I couldn't do anything," said Bo Parmelee, a Valdosta resident. "I don't remember anything for four days." It was an addiction that took control of Bo Parmelee.

"It's shameful to see a young individual validly serve this country as a hero to the country and he doesn't maybe possess the proper coping skills and so he turns to substances like alcohol or illegal drugs and he needs to find an outlet to overcome these problems. So I think the government owes them that. They need to provide these services to them for the services they have given this country," said David Wolford.

Judge Robert Fragale holds a family dependency treatment court for parents at risk of losing their children because of their addiction. These courts work with local treatment providers to link those involved in the courts with an addiction with medication-assisted treatment. Attendees to Tuesday’s meeting will receive information and education on what takes place in these courts.

Memories of drug use rekindle the urge to become impulsive drug addicts and the brain plays a major role to reinforce these memories, in part by giving them emotional weight to do what they did in the past.
