Staats’ work is quite unique for American modern dance, in part because her background, influences, and interests are international in nature. She received her MFA at the University of Colorado at Boulder. Staats has been teaching creative movement, Movement intentionality for the stage/intensive movement for actors, contact improvisation and Modern Dance for over 15 years.
She is a recipient of numerous grants and Fellowships in the United States. Her work has been presented at Jacob's Pillow International Improvisations Workshop, The White Mountain Summer Dance Festival, Bennington Choreography Project, ACDF, Sound Dance, Stonybrook College and through The Field at PS 122 among others. She was a member of The Carina Piaggio Dance/Theatre Company, the Phhhft Dance Company and Improvisational Theatre Troupe of New York City. Her multi-media solo concert, "Falling Awake", premiered this summer at the Fringe Festival in Boulder Colorado.
Her most recent activity includes performances in Paris, France and at the 21st World Conference for Dance Research in September 2007. As a result of her performance in Athens, she was asked to return and teach a Master Workshop for the Kapodistra University in Athens, Greece from October 26 through October 29, 2007. In November of 2008, She performed at the 44th International Choreographers' Showcase, ArteCentro and Centro and Centro Cultural Miguel Angel Asturias, Guatemala City, Guatemala November 7 and 8th, 2008. And taught a week residency at ArteCentro in Guatemala City. Novemeber 7-14, 2008.
She has been recognized by choreographers, dance teachers, dancers, audiences, and the press as a remarkable choreographer of contemporary dance.
