The Science is settled but the Economics isn't. My position is that we know that an income tax hurts growth. We know that  a carbon tax would hurt growth but it will also reduce problems associated with global warming. If you replace the income tax with a carbon tax you probably don't do extra damage to the economy and you probably help out the environment.

Anna, your suffering had a purpose:

Pregnant women with more morning sickness will go on to have smarter kids. Much smarter kids. One study found that 21% of morning-sickness kids scored above 130 on an IQ test, compared to only 7% of no-morning-sickness kids. Competing theories include a role for related hormones in brain development, or more plausibly morning sickness doing a really good job in its likely evolutionary role of making the mother avoid toxins dangerous to the developing fetus.

I'd like to see an update on how taking medication for morning sickness affects this...

If your goal is to help people...
A few months back, I ran into one of the founders of GiveWell, the charity evaluation website, and he thanked me for having talked up GiveDirectly the charity based around helping to fight global poverty by directly transferring money to poor people. That's their No. 2 rated charity. But he...

Video from the inside of a mosquito bite. The first and third videos are worth watching.
The video above shows a brown needle that looks like it’s trying to bury itself among some ice-cubes. It is, in fact, the snout of a mosquito, searching for blood vessels in the flesh of a mouse. T...

As you wish...

Inconceivable!

Saw this and I laughed more then a little...or as the kids say "a lot"...I'm still laughing on the inside...it's less impressive then when you can hear me but if you were here you'd see the mirth in my eyes.

That's a significant difference to selling it commercially so kids can use science to mutilate bugs.

Apparently I only flunked my math test because my teacher was an ideologue:

Everybody knows that our political views can sometimes get in the way of thinking clearly. But perhaps we don't realize how bad the problem actually is. According to a new psychology paper, our political passions can even undermine our very basic reasoning skills. More specifically, the study finds that people who are otherwise very good at math may totally flunk a problem that they would otherwise probably be able to solve, simply because giving the right answer goes against their political beliefs.

The rest of the study is illuminating. Best way to avoid it, if you want to be accurate, always sit down and do the actual calculation.
Farewell, Enlightenment: New research suggests that people even solve math problems differently if their political ideology is at stake.

A gym I might join:
Practitioners of parkour have long seen public spaces as their playground, and parkour as the ultimate rebel's game. But now it has turned into a big business.

Extremely tasty. Probably the best Chinese I've had outside of China (and even better than a lot of what I had there). Definitely the most authentic place I've been here. If you're a Panda Express person you might not be getting what you expect but if you want to taste more authentic Chinese food I highly recommend here. It is a small family owned place so there aren't a lot of tables so probably best to come not during the most busy times unless you're doing take out or don't mind waiting.
