'We Launched' wifi comes to PH
THE DEPARTMENT of Science and technology has launched "Juan Konek" at Pulilan Central School in Bulacan.
The project seeks to empower the youth in the digital age and contribute to the DOST's Smarter Philippines Program to make the Philippines globally competitive through technology.
Providing the TV White Space (TVWS) network for the project is FilAsia System Technologies Inc. together with partners Aviacomm Inc. and HuMobility.
Executives of these project partners promoting information and communication technology in the Philippines were recently honored by Pangasinan Rep. Rose Marie Arenas.
Arenas said she was determined to provide Internet connectivity to more Filipinos considering that 70 million Filipinos do not have regular access to the worldwide web, thus contributing to the yawning digital divide.
"No more poor people in the Philippines left behind,"said Arenas.
Hiroshi Haradaof NICT Japan in his speech congratulated Shih Mo, CEO of Aviacomm, saying, "Shih is not only a visionary innovator in this TVWS technology, but also is a leader with a mission to bring affordable internet connectivity to people worldwide. NICT is working closely with Aviacomm to realize this goal."
The ICTO's TV White Space Initiative comes from the need to provide connectivity for the millions of people beyond the reach of commercial wired or wireless broadband service. TVWS technology uses unallocated television frequency spectrum to provide data connectivity.

This year's Global Summit, which is co-hosted by the Philippines' Department of Science and Technology (DOST) ICT Office and the country's Communication Regulator, the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC), provided the perfect platform for Mario Montejo, Secretary of the Department of Science and Technology of the Philippines to announce a national free WiFi project. This aims to accelerate the government's efforts in enhancing Internet accessibility for Filipinos to accelerate economic, social and educational opportunities and reduce the growing Digital Divide under the overarching e-Filipino Program of the DOST ICT Office.
