Indeed, those who conceal what We sent down of clear proofs and guidance after We made it clear for the people in the Scripture – those are cursed by Allah and cursed by those who curse, except for those who repent and correct themselves and make evident [what they concealed]. Those – I will accept their repentance, and I am the Accepting of repentance, the Merciful. [Surah al-Baqarah (2):159-160]

The Difference Between the Qur'aan and the Hadeeth Qudsee
The Difference Between the Qur'aan and the Hadeeth Qudsee
Shaykh Abdul Azeez ibn Abdullaah ibn Baaz (Rahimhullaahu ta'aala)

An Exclusive Translation for Sisters Upon Al-Istiqaamah

I would be grateful if you would clarify the difference between the noble Qur'aan and the Hadeeth Qudsee, and if I cannot memorise the exact wording of the Hadeeth Qudsee. So is it permissible for me to say that the meaning of the hadeeth is this or that? Is it permissble to pray the superogatory prayer reciting hadeeth qudsee?

The Qur'aan is the speech of Allaah which is a miracle that He gave to his Prophet (sallaallaahu alayhi wa sallaam). He established the Qur'aan as a proof for the truthfulness of the Prophets' Message and that he was upon the truth. And so it (the Qur'aan) is the speech of Allah, which Allah Subhanahu wa ta'ala, revealed to His Prophet, and which is considered a miracle that was bestowed upon His prophet, and it is a proof that he is truly the Messenger of Allah.

The believer recites it in his prayer and in other than it. He recites it as an act of worship, for it is the speech of Allah, both its letters and its meaning, The speech of Allaah both it's letters and it's meaning. So, the Qur'aan is the speech of Allaah with which he spoke (Glorified and Exalted is He) and Jibra'eel conveyed it to the Prophet (sallaallaahu alayhi was sallaam). This is the saying of Ahlus Sunnah wal Jama'aah. The Qur'an is truly the speech of Allah and it is not the speech of other than Him.

However, the hadeeth qudsee is the speech that is attributed to Allaah, and what the Prophet (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallaam) attributed to Allah is referred to as the Hadeeth Qudsee. Meaning, that it was a hadeeth that was narrarated from Allah (the Mighty and Majestic), so it is also considered to be the speech of Allaah, both its wording and its meaning.

If it is authentically established on the Prophet (sallaallaahu alayhi wa sallaam) that he said Allaah said such and such, then it is considered to be the speech of Allah, this is the correct opinion, both it's wording and it's meaning. As is found in the hadeeth, Allah (The Mighty and Majestic) said, "O My servants, I have forbidden oppression for Myself and have made it forbidden amongst you, so do not oppress one another. O My servants, all of you are astray except for those I have guided, so seek guidance of Me and I shall guide you." This is an example of where the Prophet (sallaallaahu alayhi wa sallaam) was narrating something (a Hadeeth Qudsee) from Allah. And the same applies to the hadeeth that are similar to this which the Prophet conveyed from Allah. This is the speech of Allaah, This is called hadeeth qudsee, but the wording is not from the Qur'aan. It's not a miracle. He can't recite it in the prayer.

He specifically recites the Qur'aan in the prayer. Mankind reads the hadeeth qudsee for the benefits of himself or to benefit his brother. As far as reciting the hadeeth qudsee in the prayer, then No, because it does not carry the ruling of the Qur'aan in this matter (i.e. it is not meant to be recited in the prayer. The Qur'aan is a miracle and it is recited in the prayer as it carries a different ruling than the hadeeth qudsee. However, the hadeeth qudsee is attributed to Allaah and it is said that it is the speech of Allah both it's wording and it's meanings, but it is not a miracle, it does not carry the ruling of the Qur'aan in the sense that no one can touch a book that contains these ahadeeth except one that is pure and it does not carry the ruling of the Qur'aan in the sense that it can be recited during the prayer. There is one ruling for the Qur'aan (as it relates to) these affairs and another ruling for the hadeeth qudsee.

The Ruling on Listening to the Qur'aan While Having Relations
Questioned asked to the Permanent Committee of Scholars:

Q. What is the ruling on listening to the Qur'aan from the radio while having relations with one's wife. That which I have within myself regarding this affair while I'm in this state, is that it repels the accursed Shaytaan from the home?

A. The Prophet (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) has indeed taught his nation that which is to be said during the time of the man having relations with his wife. On the authority of Abdillaah Ibn Abbaas (may Allaah pleased with them both) said that the Messenger of Allaah (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) said:

"As for, if one of you were to say at the time when he approaches his wife - Bis millaah Allaahumma Jan nib nash Shaytaan wajan nibish Shaytaan Maa Ra zaq ta naa- (In the name of Allaah, Oh Allaah keep us away from the Shaytaan and keep theShaytaan away from that which you provide us with), if it is decreed that a child will come from that union, the Shaytaan will never be able to harm it." (Agreed Upon).

That which is specifically binding upon the individual, is the restriction (of himself) to that which has come (in the text). Indeed, the listening to the Qur'aan from the radio during the time of having relations for the purpose of repelling the Shaytaan from the home is going beyond that which is legislated. Therefore, it is not permissible. The Magnificent Qur'aan has more of a noble status and greater sanctity than to be listened to during this situation that has been mentioned. Allaah knows best and with Allaahis the success. May the Salaah of Allaah and His Salaam be upon His Prophet, his family, followers and companions."
