“I got a feeling of self-worth that I was part of a small group that was going to have such a positive impact on the lives of two families. But it wasn’t just two families; it was the wider community and us, the volunteers. The day the houses were handed over was done so in a fanfare of song and dance. This was one of the best days of my life. I still find it hard to believe that in two weeks we enriched our lives so much and when we left, the community had grown by 2 houses and families. I never thought I would see the day that I found hard work so enjoyable and I do hope that one day I get to repeat the experience.” - Catherine Breen, Habitat Volunteer on Zambia Build Summer 2016.

“I can’t believe I finally have a place to call my own – to call home. When I first got the news that I was definitely going to have a new home, I was so happy I cried. The best thing about having a home of my own is the independence and freedom. I will be happier and more comfortable here. I get to stay in the community I grew up in – which is really important to me.”

Today was a joyous occasion that symbolised hope and new beginnings. Stella Kelleher, our latest partner homeowner, proudly received the keys to her newly renovated one-bed cottage in Rialto.

Stella is paying a small mortgage on the home and will come off the ever-growing Dublin City Council housing waiting list. We wish Stella every happiness as she begins the next chapter of her life.

THANK YOU to everyone who helped to transform this derelict house into a lifelong home, in particular Dublin City Council, our corporate volunteers, and our donors.

“To see Gloria opening her front door for the first time was a memory that will stay with me for a very long time. The joy on her face, dancing like no one was watching.” - Cormac

"On our last full day in George we had the handover ceremony. A large number of the community gathered to join in the celebrations and there was singing, dancing and speeches before the keys were handed over to Todd and Brian. This was a very emotional moment for all involved and a lovely end to our time in George."
