Most of the world's big predators are in decline, but there are some happy stories out there. This week, WWF announced that the Amur leopard population has grown to a total of 65-69 cats. This represents a more than doubling of the population in eight years. Still, the Critically Endangered subspecies remains perilously close to extinction.

Today we announced a new addition to the Google Earth Outreach Grants program (http://goo.gl/hCflz). Now, eligible nonprofit organizations in the U.S., U.K., Brazil and Canada can apply for grants of Google Maps Engine (formerly known as Google Earth Builder), for hosting, storing, managing, and styling map data.

+World Wildlife Fund and Eyes on the Forest are already leveraging this platform to share their work in a new way. Check out the video below to learn how these organizations are using their Google Maps Engine grant to raise awareness of diminishing tiger, elephant, orangutan and rhino habitat in Sumatra.

We're excited to announce today that, in a collaboration led by Dr. Matthew Hansen at the University of Maryland, we've built the first detailed maps of the world's forests, from 2000-2012, documenting and quantifying forest landscape changes such as fires, tornadoes, disease and logging.
