Scareware is indeed very popular lately, even Microsoft writes some.
(For the record: I didn't do anything bad -- I just disabled that Metro nonsense in the Windows 8 Developer Preview.)

Just woke up my Windows 7 box from standby. The desktop comes up in Aero Basic mode (yuck!) even though no offending application runs, the CPU fan spins up and I hear the coils on my GPU's VRM singing. WTF?!

Turns out that some idio^W less talented person at Microsoft decided that the "System Assessment Tool" ("WinSAT", the thing that computes those meaningless "Windows Experience Index" performance numbers) should run every Sunday 1:00am. Some Googling revealed that WinSAT doesn't even refrain from interrupting people mid-work or (with even funnier effects, given that they do a great deal of graphics tests too) during gaming, the latter one being a thing that I can imagine quite some people doing at Sunday (actually more like Saturday) night. Seriously, what a brain-dead idea is this, Microsoft?!

FFmpeg and Windows' ASLR do have a bit of humor sometimes:

[mpegvideo @ 01babe30] Estimating duration from bitrate, this may be inaccurate
