Eddie,
First of all, the Hassidic world surely believes in working. Most of the Haredi world also works. Some people, a distinct minority, get some kind of support to learn a few years and then most find some job as a rabbi or a dayan or something that they studied for.
I have children who are doing nicely with no government money but they get along, and some of them have good money that they earned.
Your statements about Pilegesh show that you did not read my material on it, but simply blew it away. The Vilna Gaon did not blow it away. In Even Hoezer 26:1 he quotes a gemora in Sanhedrin 21A that Pilegesh is without Kiddushin and without a Kesubo. But it is legitimate. The Gaon Yaavets was a great authority on Torah and he backed Pilegesh very strongly, and so did the Ramban, one of the greatest Rishonim.
My main point in this is that if a woman gets a GET from her husband that was forced, it is invalid, and if she remarries and has a child from the second husband, her children are mamzerim.
I often say that when I find a person who attacks Pilegesh I will send them some of the children who are mamzerim, and the mamzerim will ask them why they attacked Pilegesh and ignored mamzerim. Today many rabbis openly encourage forced Gittin, and the children from these woman will probably be mamzerim.

Eli Ambalu asks "Isn't it a safek if pilegesh needs kidushin? If so how would you do it?"
Eli, the Vilna Gaon quotes a gemora in Sanhedrin 21A that a Pilegesh does not need Kiddushin and does not need a kesbuo.

Great Sin and Great Penitence
The gemora in Avoda Zora 4b and 5a teaches that the purpose of Creation was not to make perfect people, which obviously never happened, but to create people who sin and repent. True repentance is the purpose of Creation. ...
