Given the scale of life in the cosmos, one human life is no more than a tiny blip. Each one of us is a just visitor to this planet, a guest, who will only stay for a limited time. What greater folly could there be than to spend this short time alone, unhappy or in conflict with our companions? Far better, surely, to use our short time here in living a meaningful life, enriched by our sense of connection with others and being of service to them.

The journey had taken time, and he learned what he could; though there were some neglected proverbs and parables. He recollected his past, and reflected upon all that he was, who he is and all the change that may still await him. Nothing is immune to the clouded future. No fate is ever chosen. Destiny is a vague sense of context, time and space.

He felt in his recent past a choice of great consequence for him, and the path beginning for another. The precipice of fatherhood broke the fog; he looked out with overwhelming happiness and purpose, paused for breath, and leapt. The act was silent to any that may happened upon the apparent choice. Only a wisp of cloud stirred where he broke the barrier to the future. For him, the leap was a deafening zen.

That's fairly close to democratic self-rule. Maybe someday I'll be able to vote for a mainstream candidate.

Not worth it. Never was.
This is a pretty terrible statistic: 154 active duty troops have committed suicide in the first 155 days of the new year--a rate alarmingly close to one per day.
