A beautiful walk, indeed. But I think I might have to duck, yes?

So grateful to my friend for piloting the plane that took us over some of the most spectacular terrain on earth during three days of aerial photography. Here is a randomly picked view of Monument Valley at sunset as we flew above Hunt's Mesa this past week-end.

Back from a short backpacking trip to Utah. This is a pix of Parunuweap Canyon (east fork of the Virgin River), a remote section of Zion NP. Unfortunately I had to cancel my 3-day aerial photography trip over the Southwest that was to start tomorrow (planned for months with two friends) due to the haze generated by wild fires. A real bummer.

Looking through my images of the Canadian Rockies, I found this forgotten pano I shot of Lake Maligne a few years back with a borrowed Hasselblad. I'm thinking of printing it big for my Canadian customers when the show season restarts in November in the Palm Springs area. Here is a "tiny" version.

I've just returned from backpacking Buckskin Gulch and Paria Canyon, 45 miles total in 6 days with a rest day at Shower Spring. Did an overnighter at Valley of Fire on the way back.

Just added: one more show in La Quinta. I've decided to add one more appearance at Art under the Umbrellas in Old Town La Quinta this coming Saturday. It will be the last show of the season in beautiful La Quinta. I'll look forward to seeing you.

On the tragic death of a man in Zion's Subway a couple days ago, this video by Shane Burrows/Climb Utah gives an excellent idea of hiking the Subway ”from the top”
The accident happened at the 3:00 mark on the video, although you can't see the waterfall below.
Very sad, I really shaken by this accident>
Last year, after finishing the last rappel at the 3:17 mark, I swam the pools to the left of the rappel on the video to look up a lovely little grotto behind the waterfall (very cold even in late August) where the man got entangled.

Partial view of my exhibit at the La Jolla Festival of the Arts. Located just past the entrance, the 40'x10' quad booth was the largest in the show.

I took this picture of my wife Patricia and my dog Sky with the Nex 7 and the awesome Zeiss 24mm lens - the combo I'm using for backpacking and long day hikes.

The California desert art show season is over. For the past 5 months I've been working the show circuit harder than ever before: setting up the huge booth in Palm Springs, Rancho Mirage, Indio, La Quinta, and Indian Wells and displaying dozens of large canvas prints on 80 to 120 feet of portable walls. Almost always first to arrive and last to leave due to the size of the booth. It has been the most amazing season. One terrific aspect of the show circuit is that I have so many friends among my artist colleagues. In between shows it's ceaseless printing, stretching (by Patricia), varnishing, shipping orders and commissions.
I can bow focus all my energy on the publishing side of my business. There will be four new books this year, and this requires the talent and hard work of several people.
Gary is currently feeding us chapters of Photographing California Vol. 1 and John is working on the layout. Tom is in Europe to shoot the last three entries for Photographing the World, which Sioux is laying out. Greg is in the San Juan Islands to add a few little-known locations to Photographing Washington. Jeff is leading workshops in Death Valley and finishing Photographing California Vol. 2. Ted has been very busy in the warehouse. It will take countless hours and a lot of energy to orchestrate this communal effort.
I need new images for next season's shows, and new research trips for future editions of Photographing the Southwest. So I managed to squeeze in a quick trip to Italy to revisit old places and discover new ones: the Amalfi Coast early this week, then Tuscany, and Burano hopefully with some clouds this time (it will be my third visit in the past 12 months), finishing off in Amsterdam with a shoot of a couple canals. I'll be traveling with my friend Dominique Blanchard; he also needs a break from the shows and I need an assistant. It will make the hard work feel easier (up before dawn, scouting locations during the day, shooting past sunset). Dominique will be posting on his FB page.

On my way to Indian Wells for the 2012 Indian Wells Arts Festival. I'm installing a triple booth today and exhibiting Friday through Sunday. The festival is held on the beautiful grounds of the Indian Wells Tennis Garden, home of one of the top tennis tournament in the world. This will be my last appearance of the season in the Greater Palm Springs are. Discounted tickets for the show are available here: http://enews.alt9design.com/t/ViewEmail/r/C0CEB6E021608B90/30B007E337DEF251AF060D6555554232

Author, Photographer, Publisher, Road warrior on the art show circuit
Introduction
I am the author of the highly-praised "Photographing the Southwest" series, as well as publishers of several other volumes in the same series(already published or about to be). I am also a full-time photographer (when I'm not managing my publishing business), showing and selling my work on the juried art show circuit since 2002. I'm a veteran of over 150 art shows all over the Western U.S.
Bragging rights
I'm most proud of the fact that during my career in the software industry, I have employed over 50 full-time people and almost all of them have left in good terms and enriched by the experience:-) In my reinvented career as a full-time pro photog, author, and publisher more than sixty thousand photography enthusiasts from around the world enjoy my books and are inspired by my images. I am the recipient of two Benjamin Franklin Awards (Best Travel Book 2007, 2009) for books I have published. For the past four years I have served on the jury of the prestigious La Quinta Art Festival, one of the top three juried art shows in the country.
