We've visited Speke Hall many times. The cafe was our first stop, and I had a bowl of pea soup that came with a delicious slice of bread.

We visited on beautifully hot Sunday afternoon. After parking in the free car park, we went inside the new building and had lunch at the restaurant there. As it was busy, we were told there was a twenty to thirty minute wait for food, but it only took nineteen minutes for the five dishes we'd ordered to arrive. The food was average, so three stars here. Definitely needs air conditioning! The gardens themselves are amazingly landscaped, though I must say I'm disappointed they removed the grass hill you could roll down! There's plenty to explore: though I perhaps finding a bench and taking in the view. There's free wifi, but you'll need the username and password from the counter (20 down, 20 up).

We visited at half past five on a Thursday for Dinner. The restaurant was largely empty, so there was plenty of tables to choose. I ordered a "Dirty Moo" burger which came with coleslaw and seasoned fries. The burger was cooked to medium-rare, the standard, but I could have asked for it to be cooked further. When it arrived: yum. Oh man, the burger was moist. Delicious, delicious: five stars. For dessert, I went for the "Chocolate Junkyard", mostly to find out what this was. A delicious chocolate cheesecake. Also yum. We kept our toddler entertained with puzzles and games handily provided, but unfortunately they have the high chairs were the straps go across the lap and not from behind around the waist. Meaning there were frequent escape attempts! I look forward to our return visit!

When we visited, at 5pm on a Thursday, there was nowhere to sit as all the remaining tables were reserved. Clearly this place is popular, so we won't make the mistake of not reserving next time we drive to Swanage. An average restaurant deserved three stars, but since we weren't able to get a table, 2 for me.

We visited on a Wednesday for dinner at 6ish. There were plenty of space in the council-run car park which is just over the road. There are tables, chairs and umbrellas on their patio, which would have been perfect had the weather been a little warmer. Instead, we went indoors and sat a table at the rear. The interior is very well-decorated, and I noticed that there were a row of seats with plug socks underneath: perhaps this place is frequented by laptop-carrying burger lovers? From placing our order to our food arriving, was a speedily 10 minutes (5 meals). The food was very good, but I think the accompanying cola wasn't diluted quite enough; we didn't mention it. I think this place deserves a second visit. The WiFi was free (required registration) and was 9.6 down, 0.8 up.

We arrived at around 10am on a Sunday that was forecast to have excellent weather. There were only a few cars parked and there was plenty of space (free if you present your National Trust membership card at the entrance). On the beach, people had set-up their stuff, nearest the dunes first: most take a Windbreaker, some also a tent, mat, and chairs. The sand near the dunes is fine, but a little dry for sandcastling: next time, I think we'll set up closer to the water. Unfortunately, the water was full of seaweed so we didn't spend too long in it (so -1 star). As the day wore, on the beach got more crowded, so the earlier you arrive, the better. The beach cafe at Knoll was expensive and full at 2pm. Near the car park, there are toilets, showers and foot washes. When we left at 3pm, there were only a few spaces in the car park free and signs up to say the car park was full.
