Grandma’s BBQ Green Beans

The key to this dish is “slow & low.” This is my grandmother’s recipe The only thing different I do than what she did is that I bake it longer and at a lower temperature. Doing so really blends and brings out all the flavors. My grandma really liked these, so she made them quite a bit (and they are very easy to make). I was more than happy to eat them every time she served them.

4 regular size cans french-cut/style green beans, well drained
1 cup ketchup*
1 cup dark brown sugar, packed
⅛ teaspoon coarse-ground black pepper
6 slices bacon
1 medium onion, finely diced

Preheat oven to 275 degrees. Fry bacon. Place on paper towel and set aside. Remove bacon but do not drain pan nor turn off heat. Add onion. Saute for 2 minutes. Mix ketchup/brown sugar/pepper. Add green pans to pan with onions. Stir well. Add ketchup/brown sugar mixture to pan. Stir well. Heat just until it begins to bubble. Remove from heat. Pour into a 2-quart baking dish. Bake for 2 hours. The top of the green beans will get very dark during baking. This is normal. Simply give green beans a quick, little stir before serving. Also tastes wonderful when reheated. Enjoy!

*I highly recommend using a ketchup that is without high fructose corn syrup. One made with all natural and pronounceable ingredients. Organic is wonderful. The better the ketchup, the better the flavor.
