Funky hole-in-the-wall... we waited for an hour for a table, but the bartender made us delicious drinks and the host kept track of who had been waiting expertly. Delicious food and so many options (ordered an octopus appetizer and the catfish entree); I have to go back and try everything I missed.

Total South End neighborhood joint. Crafty (and potent) cocktails, and really delicious food. It's always busy and extremely loud, but open late, and if you can snag a seat at the bar that's the best. Also - surprisingly affordable, which is nice given the price point at most neighboring restaurants in the South End. Always a safe bet for a great meal.

I am really starting to love Southie. There I said it. The restaurants I've been to are all above excellent including this one. My friend and I sat outside, ate hummus topped with freshly chopped scallions and bread while we meandered through the menu. Annette ordered the tuna tartare and I ordered a wonderful toasted orzo and argula salad with oranges, almonds and a honey soy dressing. Waiter was very friendly, but a bit pushy.

"great food, cosy atmosphere and very friendly service. the ""shaved mushrooms"" were surprisingly fresh and tasty. also try the veggie stew and the steak. you won't be dissapointed. funny fact: no matter how many people sit on the table, you ll only get three slices of bread! (?)"

It might be my impending 30s, but I've noticed that my most recent favorite places to hang out tend to be tucked away and dark; maybe I just like a little mystery with my manhattans? I ducked in here one snowy evening to have dinner with a friend, and I loved the cozy vibe. Franklin Cafe is on the small side, so seating can be an issue, but there's a great cocktail list to keep you company while you wait at the bar. Most entrees hover slightly above $20, and with the high quality and large portions of food I consider them a steal. Not many restaurants make me regret living in JP, but this one makes me wish I was a South End local.
