Got spare dosh for a good thing?

This is the best communication idea for people in my situation that I have ever seen. It will drastically improve the quality of life for thousands of people.

Finally got a working head/neck rig in Blender.  Had to change the way I usually rig (which I was kind of half-expecting being in a different program and all).  I love B-Bones and the IK is pretty nice and I LOVE THE WEIGHT PAINTER (yes that needed caps, though I now have high hopes for the Texture Painter).

Trying to work out if I should do progress screenies, might not bother and just do the rig test anim (which I suppose I should practise timing in while I'm about it ay).

Globus - In Memoriam

Most of what I like about this song is the guitar.

I couldn't translate all of the lyrics (mostly because I don't understand the language enough to pick up some of the joining words) so found one someone else had done.  I think they're pretty awesome lyrics.

After proceeding slowly and cautiously with frequent saves and Blender restarts, it seems that at some point for some reason I haven't worked out yet, Blender seems to increase the mesh density or something.  When I saved and quit, my sculpt had 1.13M tris.  When I opened it, Blender lagged and sputtered and then spat out a black model onto the viewport that apparently had 6.8M tris (and 3.4M faces, seeing as I'm sculpting and they're all supposed to be triangles would have thought those numbers should be the same...).

What.

If that happened last time it would explain why my model that was supposed to have 1.15M polys wouldn't open and attempted to cripple my iMac.

I'm now seeing if the problem crops up when version saving or if it's just a save and quit thing.  My current workaround is to just work on this model and never close Blender/the file til I'm done baking the normal map but that's kind of an unworkable situation specially if I find a problem and need to redo the normal map :S

And after that the next thing to test will be if the problem crops up if I start the sculpt in Blender.

I got to 1.1M tris in Sculptris and found a point that when I try to do anything useful with it causes Sculptris to crash >_<

Okay Blender 2.7, let's see what you got.

You got Subdivide Collapse in dynatopo, haven't seen that before.  Description says it should work something like Sculptris' reduce brush.  Let's see.

IT DOES.

You still need a useful Wireframe Shade in Sculpt Mode but I'll forgive you and be patient because obviously someone was listening to me about the reduce brush, I'll cope with having to constantly stop and fiddle with settings.

Also thank you for optimising the mesh and getting rid of the hole that was causing Sculptris to crash.

Obviously I'm too stupid to figure out how to rig in Blender with just bones (allegedly it can be done) and I find the empties (which I should probably be using) visually puzzling so I'm using wireframe prims set to not render.

Fortunately the system is kind enough to put up with my eccentricities and the rig is going well.

So my Blender bug seems to be somewhere in sculpt mode.  I accidentally opened another .blend file (after deciding I couldn't close the model I'm working on til I've baked the normal map which is slightly inconvenient but anyway) which knocked off the one I was working on.

I reopened the .blend file I had been working on and it showed me 6808990 tris and 3404490 faces in the stats thingi in sculpt mode.  If I go into edit mode it shows the correct number of triangles/faces (currently 1134830).  Go back into sculpt mode and huge number again.

I then enabled dynatopo and everything went back to normal.

Hm.

Disabled dynatopo, insano-count returns.

Tried optimising and disabling smooth shade, no difference.

Next test when I hit 1.15M (which was where I ran into problems opening the file last time) I'm going to see if switching to object or edit mode before closing helps.

I broke Blender :S was happily continuing on a sculpt after Sculptris blew up on me and finding Blender 2.7 acted more like Sculptris (and I'm really liking subdivision collapse), then had the brilliant idea to give 2.71 a burl before going to bed.

Installed and started fine (it was very polite and asked if I wanted to use my last prefs, yes please thank you!) and then opened the blend file I'd been working on (70Mb).

It whinged about running out of application memory. I tried shutting down everything else, rolling back, problem persisted.

I have rebooted and am currently watching Activity Monitor (which is the only thing open aside from Blender which is still struggling to open the file).

I've read a few people desperately wanting a Wacom Cintiq Companion that acts like a Cintiq Companion Hybrid, which is not possible because of several technical difficulties.

I wonder if they could do whatever it is they're doing with Android (to make it act like a normal Cintiq when hooked up to a computer) with a Linux distro (could maybe use or fork Ubuntu seeing as they're doing all that work with Unity) so that we could have the the more powerful tablet pc with a full on operating system AND turns into a normal Cintiq when plugged into a computer.

Then of course we have the problem of dumbarse companies refusing to release anything on Linux (something something not enough users, I loathe chicken and egg problems to the very depths of my being).  This isn't so much of a problem for me seeing as most of what I use is Gimp and Blender these days so I'd definitely fork out the money for one as it would make for a relatively (because you still need to copy/sync files around unless some smart cookie somehow magics with a way to sync files you're working on between Cintiq and computer on the fly in real time without too much lag especially on the Cintiq side) seamless transition for me when I have to work away from the big rig.

That's not a bad idea, though trying to work out how much time something like that might take up is rather terrifying (I'm strapped as is doing what I do).  Might have to trawl Kickstarter etc and see if anyone else has come up with that brilliant idea :)

Introduction
3d muddler. Shaolin webmonkey. Creator of AEfter Ragnarok (which will eventually get its own website, once I have enough visual stuff to make one worthwhile).

Lives on a block dubbed "Wannabe Farmstead" containing a flock of chickens, a box of bees, several vege patches and an aquaponics system, with 1 software engineer, 3 home educated kids, 3 geriatric cats, and 2 dogs.

Writes about life and education on Wannabe, occasionally about Drupal and even less occasionally about the thought and technical processes behind the aforementioned AEfter Ragnarok on a gorified blogsite called technonaturalist.

Mostly understands lojban, doesn't speak it too well.  Barely understands Malay, only knows a few words, and feels bad about not understanding it because should.  Understands about as much Cantonese as is required to do what Sifu says in class, and some words that should not be spoken in polite company.

Toolbox

Mid-2011 27" iMac [3.4GHz Intel Core i7 | 16Gb 1333Mhz DDR3 | AMD Radeon HD 6970M 2Gb] with a Wacom Cintiq 12WX attached.

I also use 100 sheet/200 page 110gsm A5 Eraldo di Paolo visual diaries (okay so I'm only on my second one, took me six years to fill the first one, I don't draw much), a pacer and an eraser.  Occasionally some of the sketches find their way onto the computer for more work and sometimes even get posted up.
